Question about Lexmark Wheelwriter 15 Series II Typewriter

IBM Selectric clutch on motor is vibrating

My Selectrice has always worked great. I have not used it in about six years. Now when I turn it on it vibrates wildley. There is a belt that goes around the motor. Next to it, looks like a clutch with springs. After a second or 2 when the motor gets to speed the cluch start chattering. From what I remember it almost seems like if a key is stuck in the down position. I do not see any keys that are stuck and also the ball for the letters does not move in this process.
Thanks for any help

You do not have a Wheelwriter, but a Selectric, right? If you haven't used it in 6 years, lots of the lubrication will be really gummy and cause this problem. You might try rotating the print shaft, the shaft the carrier rides on. Also, since you evidently have the case removed, try rotating the large pulley by hand that the belt turns.

Either the shift spring needs grease or the cycle clutch under the left protection shield you will see a gear with a belt to the left of that gear is the cycle clutch which has a hole to install grease

I would love to have the PDF of the Correcting Selectric II instruction manual. Thanks so much for offering this as a free service. You are great!

Ebay is your best bet for this one! I've found manuals for many older devices there, including a 100 year old cash register. You may have to add it as al "alert" it there's not one listed now, but I guarantee there will be eventually, and if you utilize the alert system Ebay offers, you'll be notified when one is listed for sale. Good luck!

IBM Selectric II jammed

The lubricants dryp over the years. Try spraying everything with WD40 you can't hurt it.

Cycle clutch spring broke on selectric typewriter

I am a former IBM customer engineer. I have replaced thousands of cycle clutch springs in the 80's. IBM was known for supporting the typewriters by manufacturing parts twice to three times as long as other companies. Call their parts department. I purchased third party parts from AMES and Tech Support. Both companies were located in Atlanta Georgia. Those two companies also sold the tools that are needed to replace the part. Then you need a tech. Cycle clutches are not easy to replace.

I have an IBM Selectric III that has been stored for a couple of years. Before storage it worked fine, but now it just idles when powered up and nothing operates. I assume this means it needs lubrication....

Typically a machine that has been out of use, but was previously working may just need some lubrication on the motor centrifugal clutch assembly, but the entire machine probably would need lubrication also. You can first try to hand cycle the machine by grabbing the shaft that the carrier travels on and rotating it towards the (top to rear) rotation. This shaft rotates on revolution per print cycle and at rest the slot is slightly towards the rear of the machine. If you must lubricate the machine, then remove the cover. Lift the lid, place each hand of platen knobs and with thumbs, push down on release latches, after platen is out of machine, reach inside left and right cover and release the top cover latches and pull the cover straight UP to remove. Use 10 weight oil on motor bushings and centrifugal clutch hub (motor shaft).

My IBM selectric II typewriter carriage stuck in right margin

Sounds like the return lever arm is not putting enough pressure on the return clutch, or the clutch is slipping. The exp key uses the same clutch but the pressure comes from your finger. Theres no way you can fix this yourself. Get an IBM mechanic.

The clutch is dry there is a hole for greasing it but you need a special grease gun you can try to get some oil into it.

The return clutch torque limiter is off or broken. If you take the right dust cover off it is on the turning hub around the middle of the typewriter. a small spring about 1.25 inches long with a hook on the end. I have been fixing these for 35 years. good luck. Lawrence
