Probably has an oxygen sensor so you don't run out of air. Probably not something i would bypass in a house.

Heater not starting , think the spark plug connector is not working. Is it possible to run straight to the spark plug and bypass the black box. 55000 btu keryosen heater.

the black box the wire that comes from it and goes to the spark plug is the ignition module,no you cant bypass this or there wont be any spark, make sure though that when unit is powered up theres 120 volts at the input of the black box,(where the power goes into) the box,not on the spark plug wire side either

Remove the top shell of the unit, see if the glow coil
tries to light up, if it doesnt you either have a bad outlet connection or the glow coil is broke
