Its either some files are missing that requires your device to boot up or your HDD may have badd sectors. Hopefully its not bad sectors. Try reinstalling your Operating System. If it does the same, your HDD have bad sectors. Then try a HDD regenerator software.

Before my head explodes I thought I'd ask here. The problem started with a 500 GB WD HDD when it apparently had bad sectors and prevented Vista (32 bit) from starting (on PC1). Bought a new HDD that...

You should boot from a Linux live cd and see if you can copy the data. Hopefully the bad sectors are not where your data is stored, but if that is the case you can use Hiren's Boot CD also booted from CD (not runned from Windows) and use one of it's tools for bad sectors recovery. That should isolate the bad sectors from beeing accesed to that the OS could run on that HDD, but this also means that some of your data may be lost. If you don't have a Linux CD get it from here . Also download Hiren's Boot CD from here .

How to remove bad secters

You can't delete / remove bad sectors, they're faults on your hardware. Once you have a few bad sectors, you can be sure that your disk won't last any longer. My advise is to backup now your important files.

crc is READ errors.
what is this install media
you never said, what media, CD/DVD or USB stick
nor how it was made. by you, or media came from maker.
crc is error checking system for files.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyclic_redundancy_check

it can happen 3 ways, one reading a bad CD
or writing your HDD. (bad hdd)
windows does the check both ways
and the actual HDD does it internally, and if Sectors in the HDD
are bad, it replaces them (unseen on the fly) until such day the HDD
runs out of spares and is DOOM.
we run SMART test on all suspected hDD
the more modern unstated windows by you, will tell you the HDD is failing early, W10 for example warns of HDD internal errors.

Simple answer
CRC is like dropping deck of cards to the floor
you pick them up , count 51, and now right away this deck is no good. no need to count suites. at all.
CRC is the big brother to Checksum (card deck answer)
MD5 is what we use to check large down loaded files for integrety
cheers !
