Pilot light will stay on if it is a standing pilot. Turn water heater aqustat down and plug back in. you probably need to clean water heater or replace it. i have drained down a couple of them and took out gas valve and cleaned and put back in worked fine. If you get me a model # i can look it up and tell you some things to try. not sure on yours if it has a different temperature control or if the gas valve is a dual control .

How do I light my hot water heater?

It is pretty easy - make sure gas valve is open, change control know to pilot. Press the ignitor a few times and once pilot lights up switch control to warm or hot position.

Bradford White gas power vent water heater; just replaced power vent motor and fan assembly because a bearing went out. Now the new fan motor runs constantly without igniting. Is there a switch that...

Some how you have disconnected the sensor that tells the main burner that the fan is on. Its trying to light but cant. On some models there is a air pressure switch that reads the pressure inside the vent pipe itself. It will have a small hose on it and if that has cracked or was not replaced it wont light. This is how its supposed to work--- vent fan comes on,sensor confirms fan is on,hot surface ignighter starts to glow red,and main burner is opened, another sensor confirms that main burner is lit, then hot surface ignighter turns off. Hope this helps.

What should the gas pressure be on pilot?

Don't forget to clean air intake locate under combustion parts, using instructions in service manual. Or compressed air. Ample air supply will ensure that combustion chamber does not overheat because of slowed venting of hot combustion by-product that will trip the FV system.
And remove heat trap inserts if water pressure has problem or water heater is humming or whistling

Bradford White hot water heater - burner lights only 30 seconds

The slightly warm water makes me think of a thermostat problem. The fact that the heater is 10 years old I wonder how hard your water is. Calcium build up kills water heaters. But the yellow flame you mention could be the results of dirty orfices. May want to have a Pro look at that.

Bradford White LP water Heater Power vent Will not stay lite. I took off the pipe to the power vent and it will stay lite for a little while. Then it turns off and turns back on. The pipe is not pluged....

does the fan come on, if not there is a problem with the circuit board, if it does then there is a problem with the gas valve or a wire from the gas valve to the fan , if the fan doesn't come on the gas valve is told not to open to light thru the circuit board,
