Yepp, you can do that! Its not XP who desides if you can or not, its your motherboard, if u have a free pci-slot you can install it.
Put in the pci device in the free slot, start your pc, xp will find it and ask if you want to install it. Now you have two choises
One: you let xp do all the installation
Two: you selec to install it your self via a cd where you have the drivers, you can also install it from drivers stored on your HDD,
After the installation dont forget to check device manager to see if there are yellow exclamation marks (!) next to the device.

Good luck to you

Replaced hard drive and installed WIN98. Device Manager indicates all PCI drivers are gone?

Click start control panel administration tools computer management device manager scroll through all of your devices

or for windows 7 click start right click on computer select properties in the left pane device manager scroll through all of your devices.

If you see a yellow question or exclamation mark ? ! or a red X you will need to update the drivers for this device right click select update driver/reinstall driver software.

If you can see your usb device but its not working scroll to Ports(Com&Ltd) right click to update driver

If you computer came with a motherboard disk the drivers could be on it

or you might have to download them

Rather doing a driver hunt which can take hours.

Windows XP/Vista/7/8

This might take some time being a freeware driver solution

Note: The Driver program will find all of your outdated drivers

This will automatically search for and find the correct driver you will have to update every driver individually once you update you might be asked whether you want to restart or make a system restore point.

Click no to both of these then continue updating each driver free then restart once all of the drivers have been updated.

also at cnet

on the home page you should see a search tab just type in what you are looking for

IE: Motherboard name sound drivers.

Place a tick in either windows software or all software box.

You might have to try a few times to get it right.

How do I install wifi on my old Gateway 300S desktop? It doesn't seem to

You have 2 options... 1. Purchase a USB WiFi adapter that's compatible with your current OS, which I'll assume to be Windows XP 2. Purchase a PCI WiFi card card that's compatible with your current OS, which I'll still assume to be Windows XP... PCI is better, but you'll have to physically open up your computer to install it. Either case you'll have to install software drivers for your chosen device.

I am trying to reinstall windows xp prof but i keep getting the blue screen and the system keeps shutting down, i have tried a different hard drive but get the same error.

unplug all devices except the hard drive and 1 cd/dvd rom drive. disable the audio device and any other unnecessary devices within the BIOS and remove all pci cards. remove all but 1 ram stick, and try using different ram sticks, one at a time, while trying to boot. if it boots, with 1 ram stick, 1 hard drive and 1 dvd/cd drive then try adding/reenabling the other devices one at a time, until you find the device that keeps it from booting.

if your pc wont load with just a hard drive, cd rom and 1 stick of ram, then it is prolly trashed. if removing/disabling one of the other devices (such as the sound card or the modem card) allows it to boot, then you have found what needs replaced.

How to repair system32/drivers/pci.sys w/o any CD

  1. Shut down your computer, and then remove all the Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) devices.Restart your computer. If Windows starts successfully, shut down your computer, and then reinstall the PCI devices one at a time. Start Windows after the installation of each device. When you install a device that causes the issue that is described in the "Symptoms" section, remove that device, and then continue to install the other PCI devices.
  2. If Windows does not start successfully, remove one or more of the memory modules(RAM) that are installed in your computer. Leave sufficient RAM for your computer to start and run Windows XP.

Multiple devices don't work after XP reinstall.

When you install a operating system, all the hardware drivers must be installed. Such as, chipset, graphics, Ethernet, modem, or what ever hardware you have.

So you need to go to the website of lenovo and download all the drivers
for your operating system, if the pc came with vista, and you put on xp,
they might not offer the drivers for xp, so you will have to look at every piece of hardware and go to there website and get the xp drivers.
This is the best way.

Or you can let windows find them for you.

See where the yellow shields are, click on the + sign and you will see the hardware,

now right click on the hardware and in the little window choose
Update Driver Software, then tell it to search the internet for the driver.

It will walk you through it , each page whan you click next.

Any more questions just post back.

Go to your windows update and download all hardware pertaining to  your  computer,it will be in those update the drivers and things, Before you let your system download all the things it wants to you select hardware components and it will probably be in there.

Pci something or other

the pci device driver will probably be the pci slot motherboard driver, try right clicking on it and uninstalling, restart the pc and see if it finds the correct driver, unless you have missed off one of the drivers
