Yes it is only either a or b because the unit is designed to handle min impedance of 8ohms speaker. you can not use both at the same time

First check the yam does play other sources of sound, e.g. radio or CD. Then try your ipod in another dock to check the Ipod is working.
Then check the manual for the Yam to be sure that you have set it to a mode where it will take in the signal from the IPod. Did you switch it away from IPod source to play a DVD or a CD or the radio?

Speakers not playing

The problem can be the cable or speakers or RX-V463 or settings. Need to check one by one.
Set the RX-V on DTS or Dolby Digital
1) Check Cables - connect the 2 (surround) cables from RXV's Centre Out to Centre speaker. If the Centre speaker works, then cables are ok.
2) Check speakers - Connect each Surround speaker to RXV's Centre out. If it works Speakers are ok.
3) Check RXV - Set it on DTS or Dolby Digital
Connect RXV's surround out (one at a time) L and R to the Centre speaker. If there is no sound, the problem could be RXV's settings (I need to read the manual).

Hope this helps.

Some of the speakers arent playing and trying to find the balance

Check the cabling and if all are fine go to speaker self test noise using remote to confirm your setup is fine. Thn finally check ur soundd feed format. Check which channels are nt working. Sound is always based on Content source.

My Yamaha receiver RX V463 is immediately turning itself off after I try and turn it on? (both with remote and on the receiver itself)

Power it On without speakers connected.

If it powers up, reconnect speakers one at a time to find the cause.

If the problem persist even without speakers connected,

these unit needs servicing.

Only 2 channels are working on it. on the receiver display it shows only left and right speakers

I assume you've eliminated the no-brainers like speaker definitions.

This beast has a number of Scene Templates built-in and I suspect it thinks you have one for stereo-only selected. Get into the manual and dig around pages 28 - 33.
