How can I boot from USB in a Thinkpad T22?

My internal DVD-ROM is malfunctioning and I would like to boot from a DVD using an external USB DVD-ROM. My computer is an IBM Thinkpad T22, there does not appear to be an option in the boot menu for USB.

Thanks for the help. I upgraded the BIOS and tried many options. Unfortunately, no matter what I try, there is no "boot from USB CD" option. There is an option in the BIOD to disable the floppy controller, thereby allowing USB diskette drives to be assigned as A: but unless I can fool the computer to think that the CDROM is a disk drive, it looks like there is no way around this... Unless anyone has any other suggestions?

I assume with "boot menu" you mean the BIOS boot menu (the one you get to if you press F12 during start up, before the Windows screen appears.)

  1. Go to "Enter Setup"
  2. Go to "Config", click "Enter"
  3. Go down to "USB", click "Enter"
  4. Make sure that "USB Bios Support" is enabled.
  5. (Hit "Enter" again and choose between "enabled" and "disabled")
  6. Hit "Esc" twice to go back to the main page.
  7. Go down to "Startup", click "Enter"
  8. Choose "Boot"
  9. Check if "USB CD" is in the list of boot options or excluded form booting.
  10. Hit F10, confirm any changes you made (click "Enter" for 'yes') and reboot.
  11. Tap or hold down F12 again and you should see the boot option menu again.

Note: I am not 100% sure if you can boot from a DVD externally.
I booted from the internal DVD drive fine with a Linux LiveCD. It is possible that the T22 BIOS does not support external booting. Check you version - the latest release from IBM is version 16ET32WW (1.12), release date 06/03/2004. You find that info here.

I would really appreciate if you could come back here and leave a comment, so I (and maybe others?) can learn form this ;-)

Good luck!

The Thinkpad T22 cannot boot from a USB port. That's a limitation of the machine. The T23 can.

T22 *CAN* boot from USB without BIOS upgrade -- by first allowing BIOS to start minimal Linux system which contains necessary USB drivers from a supprted drive, CD, HDD and then transfer control to USB drive to boot full OS.

Booting with External DVD for Dell Inspiron 1525

Power on your system, Press F2 on Dell logo. This would take you to system BIOS. Ensure that USB controller is ON, and USB emulation is also set to ON. Save settings and Exit. System would reboot now. Press F12 on Dell logo, and select USB ROM as the boot device. This should boot your computer through your External drive. If it still doesnt work, try switching to a different USB port. If none of these steps work, it may be a problem with the boot sector on your External drive.

Good Luck!

Usb dvd writer can install xp?

Yes you can use a usb external cd/dvd-rom to any operating system as long as the bios allows you to, most bios's have the capability.

When the external usb drive has been connected power up the mechine, in post it should tell what to press to enter your boot menu without entering your bios and choose usb drive to boot.

Can't power up. my IBM ThinkPad T22. I have the green light that indicates that it's charged up, however when I push the power button it just makes a flash and nothing happens.

If you only get a green light, try removing the battery first. If a laptop battery has gone bad, it will prevent a laptop from booting up.

Now, if removing the battery doesn't resolve your problem, check the laptop charger to make sure that the adapter has not malfunctioned.

If your fans are spinning, then the problem is probably the one listed below.

The transformer may not be converting the voltages properly.

Try these steps first. If it comes down to the internal transformer, then you have to contact IBM.

Where is the wireless switch in the T22?

To my knowledge the T22 does not have an extra wireless switch, but I might be mistaken. Have a look here.

They all have function keys which enable and disable the radio (if a wireless adapter is pre-installed). Usually it is the blue "Fn" key and the F5 key.

Since the T22 does not have wireless "onboard", I assume that you are using an external adapter.
Right-click "My Computer", choose "Manage" and go to the "Device Manager".
If there is any trouble with your hardware or driver, you should see a yellow exclamation mark. If that is the case, try to reinstall the driver.
If you see a red "x", it means that the device is not enabled. Double-click that device and enable it at the bottom of the window.

If this did not get you any further, please come back here and tell me what you found. I'll be happy to see what else I can do.
