Question about E-Machines emachines (emachinees) CD-ROM Drive

26 Answers

Slimtype Combo LSC

Hi,
I have been unable to burn a cd (I get error 4000) on iTunes and can not play an audio cd. A blank cd will show in the system but like I said, I can't burn ANYTHING to it, including pictures and other media. I can however, play a dvd. Any suggestions?

I've contacted eMachines for updates and I can't get a straight answer. I have researched all over the internet to no avail. Please help!

I have done a full virus scan and my system is fine. I bought 'Driver Detective' and it says my driver is fine. I bought RegScan and it says that it has fixed all of my errors. I have defragged. I have plenty of memory.

It was working fine until about July/Sept of last year, then it started doing what I have listed above.

This is about my last option before I throw my computer across the room!!!

  • rhdestiny Jan 30, 2009

    It is not a virus!!!!

I've also deleted the driver from the 'system' area and restarted my system so it could reload.

Someone told me it might be the firmware.

  • rhdestiny Jan 30, 2009

Getting burning software doesn't fix the problem, only the symptom. Even if it will burn cds, you have to burn them separately from iTunes and it still doesn't fix my being unable to play audio cds.

  • rhdestiny Jan 30, 2009

It is not just that it wont burn a cd, it WONT READ AN AUDIO CD EITHER. When I put in an audio cd, it just spins in the drive then locks up.

When I try to burn a cd through iTunes (which I prefer and have been able to do until a couple of months ago) it gives me error 4000, then says 'disc burner or software not found'.

BUT, again, it not just the burning issue...it is the fact that it wont read an audio cd either so I would think it would have to do with the drive not the burning software.

  • rhdestiny Jan 30, 2009

If something was wrong with just the cd (and like the last suggestion said, I could just clean it), then it wouldn't be able to read a blank cd in the drive.

When I put in a blank cd, it recognizes it and asks me what I want to do with it (audio, pictures, etc).

Thanks for the suggestions but so far I have already tried what you are suggesting or it doesn't fully fix the problem, only parts of it.

If you look on the internet, the 'Slimtype combo lsc-24082k' has had many issues- I'm not the first.

  • rhdestiny Jan 30, 2009

I tried the iTunes re-install and it didn't work. I still have the same issues.

  • rhdestiny Jan 31, 2009

I appreciate your suggestions but it still is not working. Here is what I've done:

    - I 'repaired' iTunes and even went onto the apple site to re-install from them (just in case mine was installed incorrectly)
    - I changed my burner to 8x
    - I DON'T KNOW HOW to update the VIRTUAL driver or what to change with the suspicious filter drivers (some help with this would be appreciated)
    - I re-installed the newest GEAR software
    - I don't know what 'Explorer Integration' settings are so I don't know what to 'uncheck'(I would need some guidance with this as well)

*I did a diagnostic check in iTunes for my cd/dvd drive and this is the result:

    **** CD/DVD Drive Tests ****

    No drivers in LowerFilters.
    UpperFilters: GEARAspiWDM (2.0.7.5),

    D: Slimtype COMBO LSC-24082K, Rev JBK2
    Drive is empty.

Force Optical Power Calibration before burn is turned on in the preferences.
The last failed audio CD burn had error code 4000(0x00000fa0). It happened on drive D: Slimtype COMBO LSC-24082K on CDRW media at speed 24X.

If anyone can help me with any of these loose ends, please let me know.

    Thanks!

  • rhdestiny Jan 31, 2009

I got your solution but unfortunately eMachines has no updates for
software and/or firmware for me to download. I've already tried.

I also tried to get the firmware from the maker of this drive LiteOn but when I tried to install it I got this error message:

    No Match drive detected!

This utility is only for slimtype combo LSC-24082K

    Detected drives:

    1-0-0-0 Slimtype combo LSC-24082K

It is the same thing right?!?

Since I can't get the updated firmware/software, then should I go ahead
and do the rest of what you said? And if so, how do I save my
firmware? I didn't understand your instructions.

And btw, when I go into 'systems' in the computer and go to the drive, the location says '0'.

  • rhdestiny Jan 31, 2009

"i'll resolve it by ....Uncheck The CD Text Box, might be it helps for you."- How do I do this? Where do I find this option?

Where would I find if I had 'Virtual Cd'? I don't think I have it but how do I find out?

  • rhdestiny Jan 31, 2009

How do I enter the registry? And what exactly are you wanting me to delete? I've got no idea what you are talking about.

Like I have said, I only know enough to be dangerous as far as computers are concerned. I know more than your basic person but not beyond that. So please keep that in mind when you answer this for me.

    Thanks!

  • rhdestiny Feb 04, 2009

I appreciate your help but unfortunately, this solution didn't work. There is no change at all.

    Thanks anyway!

  • rhdestiny Feb 04, 2009

    Yep...it is enabled.

  • rhdestiny Feb 04, 2009

The apple thread is no longer valid. The other info you posted is advice given by someone else straight from another site. So far, nothing is working that they mentioned.

  • rhdestiny Feb 04, 2009

There is not 'expand optical drive' in device manager. I followed your instructions, step by step but didn't see that option.

  • rhdestiny Feb 04, 2009

    Cd text is not checked.

  • rhdestiny Feb 05, 2009

What is that and where do I find it?

  • rhdestiny Feb 05, 2009

If it is a faulty drive, then why does it give me error 4000 in iTunes?

  • rhdestiny Feb 05, 2009

It's able to tell if there is a blank cd in the drive though, so wouldn't that mean it has the capability to read the disc? I would think that if the cd drive is bad, it would spin without reading ANY disc that wasn't a dvd.

  • rhdestiny Feb 05, 2009

I have also done extensive research on this error message and most of the people with that error were able to fix it. I even read on one site to not replace the drive since that was not the problem.

I appreciate all of your advice but I'm going to take it to a professional tomorrow and find out for sure what's happening. This site is not working for me.

    Thanks anyway!

  • rhdestiny Feb 05, 2009

They have not 'all' come to the same conclusion (to replace it). The main problem is that I listed everything in great detail (like I was told to) and very few read it. They just gave out random advice, most of which had already been suggested. AND, I have said numerous times I am not an expert but time after time I was given solutions that were not fully explained, pasted info they had googled off of other websites (most of which didn't make sense because it was part of an ongoing conversation), had corrupted downloads, or were just suggestions of 'replace it'. It seemed most were just interested in their 'advice' being rated.

Replacing it is the easy way to 'fix' something. I have read over and over again that replacing the drive doesn't fix error 4000. And I will repeat myself once again, if the cd drive was bad then it wouldn't read any cd, not just the audio cds.

  • rhdestiny Feb 06, 2009

I really appreciate you all trying to help but how many times do I have to say it- I'M NOT AN EXPERT WITH COMPUTERS!!!!!!!!! That being said, what in the world is a ribbon cable and how would I see if it isn't connected or whatever?!?

It doesn't matter because if you had read to the end of my post, you would have seen that I am taking it to someone to fix. I'm done here!

  • rhdestiny Feb 06, 2009

Yes, the blank cd was the only thing, besides the dvd, that registered in the drive.

  • rhdestiny Feb 06, 2009

Edse thank you so much for trying to help and come up with additional solutions. I appreciate your time and I will let you know what happens.

  • rhdestiny Feb 07, 2009

My drive is fixed and it was just as simple as a loose piece in the tray of the disk drive. The piece that has the laser on it was a little out of place and as soon as I pushed it back, the drive worked. Easy breezy. I can play audio discs and burn cds. Simple!

This CD ROM drive is done. i would defiantly cut my losses and purchase another one. also, i would buy a totally different type of burning tool. maybe roxio media. this is a great tool for burning anything and it is very user friendly. try cleaning the registry as well. this may bring the cd rom back possibly if the lens isnt dead.

Hi.
Common problem. Like all drives, that reads/writes both formats CDs and DVDs, they use different type of laser (CDs - 780nm wavelength, DVDs - 650nm wavelegth). So if one of them fails, the other still works fine. The solution for you is to buy in addition a new CD-RW drive or replace the existing CD/DVD-RW with the new one. Good luck

  • Ekse Feb 04, 2009

repost then to get more assistance, to me the drive is clearly faulty and would need to be replaced.

  • Ekse Feb 04, 2009

it was clear the drive is unable to read CD's but works with dVDS thats a clearly faulty drive, I have those over here. use your warranty or buy a replacement drive for the laptop.

  • Ekse Feb 05, 2009

the fact that you get the error 4000 is irrelevant, the drive can't read a cd at all, it just spins in the drive indicates a problem with the drive.

  • Ekse Feb 05, 2009

well, try burning with another program to the empty disk.
    get iso burner
    http://www.ntfs.com/iso-burning.htm

then download a iso image for memtest here
    http://www.memtest86.com/download.html

extract the zip, and open the iso in the iso burner, try burning the disk. if it works. restart the computer and start from the cd, it should test your memory.

  • Ekse Feb 05, 2009

I hope you come back and let us know what the problem is.

    Thanks!

  • Ekse Feb 05, 2009

the error 4000 is a symptom of a problem with the drive.

A easy fix perhaps would be to reinstall windows to the computer, install itunes again and try.

also you can try the iso burning does the drive burn the iso and does it work? if it doesn't you have got a faulty drive.

    Thank you,
    Ekse

  • Ekse Feb 05, 2009

    Hi again

When we where in session we did try a data and audio cds correct? and they only spinned in the drive?

blank cd was the only thing that registered aside from dvd.

  • Ekse Feb 07, 2009

so in the end it was a hardware problem no one of us could have figured out over the internet....

Enter the registry and deleted the upper and lower filter keys.
start. click run. type regedit. (if you have vista, type it in the startsearch box. click ok.
Click the plus next to Hkey local machine
click plus next to system
click plus next to Currentcontrolset
click plus next to control
click plus next to class
click on the entry {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} to highlight it.
On the right pane, see if you have lower filters and upper filters. right click and delete them.
restart and see if it works.

If you get an error when opening itunes after deleting the filters, just reinstall the gear drivers.

If it doesnt't work still, pls post back your progress.
Otherwise, pls dont forget to accept this solution.

To edit the registry this is what you should do.

Before editing it, let's back it up first for precaution.

    To backup the registry:

    1. Click start. Click run (if you have windows vista, click the start search box).

    2. Type in 'regedit' inside the box without the quotations. Click ok.

    3. You will get the registry editor. On the left pane, you'll see several folders with pluses beside them. Make sure My computer is highlighted. If not, click it once to highlight it.

    4. Click on File on the menu bar on top of registry editor. Click Export. When you get the 'save in' box, choose 'desktop' in the 'save in' field. click ok.

Now that you've backed it up. we'll edit it to delete the filters.

Still in the registry editor window, look for 'HKEY LOCAL MACHINE'. It is one of the folders on the left.Click the plus beside it. You will get more folders under it.

    click plus next to system
    click plus next to Currentcontrolset
    click plus next to control
    click plus next to class

click on the entry {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} to highlight it.

On the right pane, see if you have lower filters and upper filters. You may see just one of the two or both. Regardless we have to delete them. To delete the entry, you need to right click where it says 'lower filters'. Then, left click delete. click ok on the confirmation prompt.

Repeat the same procedure for upper filters if it's also there.

    Close registry editor.

Restarted the computer then try your cd drive if it's already working.

This will Fixya

Go here and select your computer model and select firmware update for the drive, download and save to the desktop.
Go here and Get the Firmware flash Save to the desktop
Go here and Get flash fix Save to the desktop

Step 1: Make a backup copy of your current firmware. You can do so using LtnFW. you should make this backup incase you decide that you want to undo the firmware flash, you will need a backed up firmware.

Step 2:The firmware flasher is checking your drive and seeing that you have an OEM model and is thus refusing to flash it. FlashFix will patch the firmware flasher so that it will agree to flash your drive.

Step 3: After using FlashFix, run the flasher, make sure that you select the correct drive from the drop-down list, and flash.
.

Please rate this a fixya

Also,If you have more than one burner program, you may need to remove some.( for example Roxio don't work well with Nero )

Hi!

Try using a diffrent version of itunes. An Error 4000 in iTunes usually occurs when another CD burning program is running, has contents waiting to be burned or something else has set itself as the default burning program. Try this:

Go to the Windows XP Control Panels, run the Add/Remove programs, then scroll down to iTunes and click Change/Remove. Then select the Repair option; DO NOT select Uninstall. This will reset all of iTunes default settings and often will fix the CD burning issues specifically related to the 4000 error.

If this does not help, go to the Edit/Preferences menu in iTunes and on the Burning tab set the "Preferred Speed" to 8x (or lower) instead of the default ("Maximum Possible").

Hope this helps.

You can find burning prefrences in iTunes preferences -> Advanced -> Burning.

You may have to see if you have any other CD-burning software (such as Roxio Easy CD Creator, Nero, etc.) and if so uninstall it and see if that gets iTunes burning. Be sure to restart your system after uninstallling.

    Thanks

    Rylee

On the new version of iTunes when you insert a new CD a box will appear with burn speed, audio CD etc... Make sure that the "Include CD Text" box is not checked. If you have an older version of iTunes click Edit, click Preferences, click Advanced, click Burn, and remove the check mark from the "Include CD Text" Box. I've burned at all speeds and this solved the problem across the board! If for any reason this didn't work go to the Control Panel, click Add/Remove programs scroll down to iTunes and click on it, then click on the "Click here for Support Information" click the "Repair" button, restart your computer and repeat the steps above. Bottom line; just make sure the “Include CD Text" box is not checked!

Error 4000 shows that the software is either corrupt or not functioning properly
you need to reinstall the firmware and update it so that the machine can communicate properly with the device

  • iTunes Error 4000 usually occurs when another CD burning program is running or another CD burning program has contents waiting to be burned or something else has set itself as the default burning program. Results may vary but it seems that if you go to the Control Panel and Add/Remove programs then scroll down to iTunes and click Change/Remove then select the Repair option, DO NOT select uninstall. This will reset all of iTunes default settings and should fix the CD burning issues you might be having specifically related to Error 4000.
  • If this does not work you can go to the Edit/Preferences menu and on the Burning tab set the "Preferred Speed" to 8x instead of the default ("Maximum Possible").
Please also make sure that you updated the Virtual CD driver.------- There are two "suspicious" filter drivers in your system which are known to cause problems:
c:\windows\system32\drivers\gearaspiwdm.sys - CDRom Class Filter Driver - GEAR Software Inc. - 2.0.6.0
and
c:\windows\system32\drivers\pxhelp20.sys - Px Engine Device Driver for Windows 2000/XP - Sonic Solutions - 2.3.32.0
You can try to rename the one or the other, reboot and retry.----
same problem and "solved" it as follows: After the installation of Virtual CD he rebooted and just to be sure he then installed the driver of the Virtual CD SCSI Controller again.
I cannot imagine why this should have worked, but you never know. I think it may be worth a try.

OK, GEARAspiWDM.sys is the burning engine for iTunes and thus absolutely necessary. Maybe the installation of thenewest drivers from GEAR Software will solve the problem. I'm still quite sure that the driver is the problem as we encountered so many problems with this driver before. Just have a look for GEARAspiWDM in our knowledge base and you'll see what I mean...
same issue. Rebooting, replacing drivers, etc. gave no results.

I finally cured it by unchecking all options in the "Explorer Integration" settings. Have been able to burn both MP3's and audio books to virtual cd without problem ever since.

Go to control panel>add/remove
programs>iTunes>change/uninstall and click on "repair" (NOT UNINSTALL). This
reinstalls iTunes as the main cd burning program and overides any competing
burning software, like nero for example. Don't worry you won't lose your
music. If you're nervous about losing your music, copy it before you perform
the repair.

Oh gee the solution is simple.

You can't burn CD's? A new burning program isn't going to help.

It worked once before? New firmware isn't going to help.

The best solution is to replace the drive itself. They can be had for $15. Or get a combo CD/DVD burner for $22.

I have itunes 8.0 and when the screen popped up to ask what the speed is, it didn't matter. what did matter what the cd text. UNCHECK!!!
its an itunes bug and for some reason it won't allow you to burn disks. You can keep sound check though.
If you have a different version, sorry.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

It would seem that your concern is limited to the CD part since DVDs are still readable. Initially, what could be tried is to use a CD disc cleaner as shown below. There are drives that uses a separate lens for the CD & DVD.
Slimtype Combo LSC - da782a9.jpg
Alternately, you can remove the CD/DVD drive check/replace. This is relatively easy and would not cost much. You can even upgrade and purchase a DVD write.

Of course another is to try using a different CD burning software.

Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

Hi
You should try the link give below and I am sure you will be able to resolve the issue

I un-checked the CD Text block and it worked. Ifthe tunes are not in AAC format perhaps an open source program willwork. I use CDEX a lot. http://cdexos.sourceforge.net/?q=download. Also, iTunes will convert files to .mp3, and then you can use WindowsMedia player to burn a CD, or copy the mp3s and use as you like. Hopethis helps.

Also perform this:

Change burning speeds from 1x through 48x
-Make sure the disc is recognized. It is.
-Try audio cd, mP3, data cd.
-tried cd-RW and cd-R.
-Reinstalled iTunes

Error 4000 in iTunesThis is really odd because I had it working at one point, but don't know what's changed to cause this problem. Basically, I purchased some music, iTunes created the play list, I selected the play list and told it to burn a CD. I right clicked on Virtual CD icon in the task bar and on my virtual CDR I told it to create a 700MB disc and insert it. iTunes sees it and then it says "checking playlist" and then it as soon as that is done, it briefly says it's starting to burn the cd when it immediately switches to canceling cd burn and then shows a dialog with the following: The attempt to burn the disc failed. An unknown error occurred (4000).

I've ensured I have 8.0.0.7 or vdrv8000.sys and I've tried different combinations of settings to no avail. I've also just tried to burn non protected files with the same result. Anybody know what's going on? Nero Burning Rom 7.0.8.2 burns to the virtual drive okay (tested audio burn with MP3s) Burning to my physical Sony DVD is working okay. As I said, I did have this working at one point, but that was about a week or two ago and I have no idea what has changed.
    Thanks

Go to this website and make sure you read through the entire set of messages (keep scrolling down). It's a Windows error, not an iTunes error, and they discuss how to fix it although it looks a little tricky.
    Good luck!

Cd burning error

If possible, use a second CD player/burner to burn a CD. If can't borrow one, either internal or external (USB), they are fairly cheap second hand. I suspect your CD player has become defective, maybe only in burn mode. Can you burn anything (eg, software) using this item ? ie is it only iTunes that's affected ?

How to Play iTunes Music on Windows Media Player

There's a good chance when you buy music from the iTunes Store that the files that you download will be copy protected by Apple's FairPlay DRM system. It's a great system that protects the rights of the artist and publisher by making it difficult for the consumer to distribute copyrighted material. However, DRM can also be very restrictive by stopping you playing legally purchased music on your MP3 compatible hardware. So, what happens if you want to play your DRM'ed music on a non-iPod?

This tutorial will show you a way to produce DRM-free music that doesn't require any special software that you would normally need to buy. All you'll need is the iTunes software, and a blank CD (preferably a rewritable (CD-RW)).

Before we begin, check for any updates that are available for your iTunes installation, or download the latest version from the iTunes website。

Configuring iTunes to burn and rip an audio CD

CD Burner Settings: In order to set up the iTunes software to burn an audio CD, you first need to go into the settings menu and select the correct disc format. To do this, click on the Edit tab on the main menu and select Preferences from the menu list. On the preferences screen, select the Advanced tab, followed by the Burning tab. First, make sure your CD burner is selected from the drop-down menu alongside the CD Burner option. Next, Select audio CD as the disc format that is to be written by your CD drive.

CD Import Settings: While you are still in the preferences menu, click on the Importing tab to access the CD ripping settings. Verify that the On CD Insert option is set to Ask to Import CD. Next, set the Import Using option to a format of your choice; the MP3 Encoder is your best choice if you want to import audio CDs as MP3 files that play on virtually all compatible devices. Choose an encoding bitrate from the Setting option; 128Kbps is the normal setting that is good enough for the average listener. And finally, make sure the Automatically Retrieve CD Track Names From Internet and Create File Names With Track Numbers and both checked. Click the OK button to save your settings.

Making a custom playlist

To be able to burn your DRM copy protected songs to audio CD you will need to make a custom playlist (File > New Playlist). You can add music tracks to a playlist easily by dragging and dropping them from your music library to your newly created playlist. For instructions on how to achieve this, why not follow our tutorial on How to Create a Custom Playlist Using iTunes.

While creating a playlist, make sure that the total playing time (displayed at the bottom of the screen) doesn't exceed the capacity of the CD-R or CD-RW you are using; typically, the total playing time of a 700Mb CD is 80 minutes.

Burning an Audio CD Using a Playlist

Once you have created a playlist, simply left-click it (located under the playlists section in the left pane), and then click on the File tab on the main menu, followed by Burn Playlist to Disc. The CD drive tray should now automatically eject so you can insert a blank disc; ideally use a rewriteable disc ( CD-RW) so you can reuse it multiple times. Before iTunes starts burning the DRM protected songs, it will remind you that creating an audio CD is for your own personal use only; once you have read this notice, click on the Proceed button to start burning.

Ripping an audio CD

The final step in this tutorial is to import (rip) the songs that you burned onto audio CD, back to digital music files. We have already configured iTunes (step 1) to encode any audio CD that is inserted into the CD drive as MP3 files and so this stage of the process will be mostly automatic. To start ripping your audio CD, simply insert it into your CD drive and click the Yes button to start. For a more in-depth look at this process, read the tutorial on How to Import CD Tracks Using iTunes.

Once this stage is complete, all the files that have been imported into your music library will be free from DRM; you will be able to transfer them to any device that supports MP3 playback.

Note:The only downside in using this method is that if you have a lot of files that you need to convert, then it ends up a slow and tedious process. With this in mind, use a legal drm removal tool if you have a large quantity that you need to convert.
