Question about Maxtor Shared Storage II (S01R320) Hard Drive

Can the HDD be replaced in a Maxtor Shared Storage II

Unit is 2 years old thus out of warranty. It has developed a loud whine noise when it first boots then it quites down. I have no trouble accessing data on it but I'm afraid its going out. I have a Seagate Freeagent backing it up via USB so I do have duplicate data. Can I just swap out the hard drive in the unit? It's a 320GB.

Thanks for this great insight. I have not torn it apart yet but your diagnosis sounds right on. I have heard bad fans and that is exactly what this sounds like. This would also explain how the drive appears to have no problem when "it" sounds so bad. I'll keep you posted. Also, I must say this site is Great. I posted for the first time last night and had an answer when I got up. Wow, most manufacturers don't have tech support this good. Thank you all for your dedication and time.

OK, I'm ready to tackle it. Any tips on how to get the case open?

Thank you for this extremely helpful info. The video is great. They don't make it easy, do they? I think I'll get a fan ordered so I'll have one when I 'rip' it open. I'll take the chance that they are the same. Since we have diagnosed it to be a fan problem and mine is only noisey when it starts, for a short time, I am not in a rush. It will probably get worse over time so I'll be prepared. Thanks Again

To get the case open look at the this video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLJoYb9-6R0

You'll need to find a replacement fan. Read the information on the old fan to get the specs. The fan on mine was a 30x30x10 mm in dimension, 5 VDC 0.12A made by JMC Products - www,jmcproducts.com. I bought my replacement from Future Electronics - www.futureelectronics.com. The replacement I chose was SUNON GM0503PFV1-8.GN. You can also find relacement fans from Mouser Electronics - www.mouser.com (Mouser is a bit more expensive).

I think you should wait until you open the case before you buy the fan. If you order the fan now before verifying its size and power ratings, you may be throwing away $20.

BTW, now that you know the secret to opening the case, I think you should do it immediately. It is actually quite easy. You can still operate the drive with the case off while waiting for the fan replacement. Don't wait for the fan to seize; the drive will stop working, and you'll have a real emergency.

PS. the drives I have are Network Accessible Storage (NAS) they are formatted with the XFS file system, which makes it virtually impossible to replace, unless you get the replacement from Seagate. I think the USB drives are formatted with either NTFS of FAT32 file systems, so their replacements are much easier, but I'm not sure. Here is something else to consider if you need to replace the drive.

    Good luck and best wishes.

Warning, another user determined that his fan was a 12V model.

Yes you can just swap it out with another drive,,just make sure the Pin is set in the same place,,and that you re-attach your hard drive to the same place on the ribbon cable.
But before you do all this,,,are you quite sure its your hard drive making the whining noise? and not a worn out cooling Fan?

try and assign the drive a drive letter by right clicking on my computer and choose manage.
go to disk management
look for the maxtor hard drive.
if you see it listed there below you should be able to right click on it and assign a drive letter.
if you dont see it then it doesn't detect the hard drive. please check your hard drive connections and try again.

No experience with this model but if you open the enclosure there is a regular hard drive inside. You may be able to fit it inside a pc, or use a hard drive caddy to get at your stuff

Unable to see Shared Storage Drive II on EasyManage via Wireless

Just got a Maxtor Share II drive and absolutely love it. Setting it up was a pain especially when the drive didn't remember the Administrators password.
Here's what I think the problem may be

1-Your router is not assigning an IP address to the drive
2-Make sure your router is configured to DHCP IP configuration not Static.
3-Before trying to use the drive make sure to install the Software/Drivers first.
Other suggestions

This may or may not apply to you. I got my Maxtor drive on 4-07-08 and from previous experiences with other computer products, ie, windows software, printer drivers, etc. The manufacturer in order to rush things out the cd software that comes with the product is not the final version and most likely the software already has an update on the manufacturer’s web site so it’s always good to check before committing to what you get on the CD. So sure enough the BIOS for my Maxtor Share II 500Gig hard drive was already old. I downloaded the new version upgraded the BIOS and my drive is working great. I hope this suggestions help. Enjoy your drive. Alfredo.

Windows repeats 'new hardware found' when I attch my maxstor One touch II

The reason is simple, your Maxtor drive "does not" support Windows-ME. Since Windows-ME is not supported by your Maxtor drive the drivers dont get resolved and will never get installed. FYI - Windows-ME is almost 10 years old. What makes you think Maxtor will support Windows-ME?
