It could be your laser needs cleaning, strip the machine down and take apart your dvd drive casing. get a cotton earbud and spit on it a little, in a very careful clockwise motions (dont put too much pressure on) clean the laser eye with the cotton earbud (with the spit on it). you can also use alcohol but i dont like this as it can sometimes leave a little film over the laser.

put everything back together then try again if its ok you have fixed it, if its still the same let me know and ill find a guide on how to adjust your laser unit and put the power up slightly.

I cant figure out how to update my xbox just to where i can watch movies off of the jump drive / flash drive

You must have a live account and access to the internet. Put the flash drive in the 360, turn it on, go to video library, select the movie you are trying to watch. If it is a supported format is will ask you to download the media optional update (supports most avi, xvid, etc formats).

No screen on the Xbox 360

right do the towel trick it works. wrap the 360 in 2 towels and leave it on for 15 mins. then go bk to your xbox un wrap it. put it near a window if possible ( i did and its working fine) due to it being near a window you will get no overheating and its well ventilated.
