Unknown power-on password on hp dc5750 desktop

Hi there...

no clue what happened (while i was away) but came home to "Enter Power-on password" (and an old fashioned looking key next to it). Enclosed in a blue box in middle of screen with black background.

during reboot, the normal F10, F12, etc come up, but will not allow me in to anything at all and just beeps.

have NEVER put a password on this computer (no one will admit, of course) and have 4 tries in the blue background box and total lock up.

I don't have the start up disks, but have my laptop to find answers and hopefully a simple fix???? just need the password gone and back to normal booting and then i can password correctly from little hands :)

if you are available tonight, please email me with any suggestions or ideas or fixes or ???? so muuuuchhhhhhhhhooo appreciated!

thanks so much for reading my rambling

Sounds like somone has put What they call a bios/boot user password this is a password thatis used before windows even loads up.

If no one will tell you the password the only other way i know of to reset the password is to open the computer case and remove the CMOS battery which is a CM2032 button batter you cant miss it

Remove that battery and remove power to the case for a few minutes then replace the battery and power back on.

Check the power supply connections inside the tower. The move may have dislodged one or more. You should also remove and re fit the RAM sticks - make sure the power lead is dis-connected when you do this.

Hp 5750 powerup password

Hi,
removing the battery would not solve the problem

You would have to find a jumper Green in color near the CMOS Battery area,It would read PSWD on the motherboard

It will be connected to pin 1 & 2, change it to pin 2 & 3 - this will reset the password,

Now clear the CMOS by pressing the power button

Then restore the jumper back.

Thanks

Desktop turns off and a flashing red light appears

Sounds like you need to reseat the processor and heat sink, and use some good quality thermal paste.

If a reseat dosent do it, test the power supply, ocasionally they will be bad right out of the box, it is rare, but it happens.

Also check the MoBo connections, and make sure all fans are connected powered up and spinning, people often miss reconnecting something when swapping motherboards.

Hope this helps!!
