I want to restore to factory state but boot cd won't work
Ok here the downlo, I have a NEC Versa L2200 series notebook, I had vista home basic on it originally, I found vista to be complete rubbish and after one to many drinks after shift work i used a rebuiled cd from a different pc to try n load xp(yes this woz silly) I managed to get xp to work for a period of time however now i wish to put vista back on so i wiped xp but when i try to use the vista recovery cd it just comes up with an error msg, an unexpected error I/O error has occured, OxcOOOOOe9, apparently caused by faulty hard drive or cd-rom but i can use other cd's and they work fine.

I think your hard drive which is a SATA drive, needs to be formatted specially for Vista. you need to find out the make and model of your hard drive, and then you can download a hard drive formatting utility program from the hard drive manufacturers website. The hard drive is accessed from under the keyboard on this model.

click on F2 and that will take you to the Bios setup, check that your hard drive and Ram (Memory) are both online if all is ok and no problems press F12 it might take you to a diagnostic screen prompting you to perform a diagnostic test, if so do the tests and write down any errors given, if there is not diagnostic tool you might get the options to restor factory defaults this option will reset your computer to its original state and you will lose all your data. Another option if you have the operating system's cd (windows xp, vista etc) from the bios (F2) change the boot sequence to cd (just click on Cd/DVD Rom)only and reboot, windows will ask you if you want to repair, if all your hardware is ok and you should be able to solve the problem good luck and all the best
You need a windows Vista disc. Insert the disc and follow the prompts. I would format the hard drive instead of upgrading do a new install. The best way would be to go into your bios and make sure the boot device order has the cd-rom booting before the hard drive. Then put the disc in and start the computer, when it says press any key to boot from cd hit any key and let it load and then follow the prompts to install.
You download the drivers from the NEC WEB site, make sure you select your model laptop/computr and the correct XP or Vista version of the drivers.

If you cannot see the speaker icon in the taskbar, click on Start > Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices and tick place icon in the taskbar. That's if a driver has been installed for your sound device which is a creative sounblaster I think.
