Kenmore Elite Trio makes creaking/groaning sounds

Our refrigerator occasionally (every couple of months) makes creaking/groaning sounds for an extended period. The sounds emanate from the rear of the fridge, and are constant (and EXTREMELY ANNOYING) for several days in a row. Of course, it has never made these sounds with a repairman handy. When I described the sounds, one said it was probably compressor noise, and that there was nothing he could do about it. I just don't buy that. Why does it only happen every once in a while? If it is a component failing, why does it not make this sounds all the time? My daughter just tonight noticed that when she opens the freezer, the sounds immediately stop, and when she closes it, the sounds immediately start again. Very strange! What can I do?

I have the same problem of the creaking/ groaning noise. Just noticed it today (4-10-09).  We purchased our Trio in 04 and have already had the compressor replaced.

I have a Kenmore Elite Trio and the freezer was making a frog sound. I found the solution.

My model number is 596.75523400. The sound will stop when the freezer is opened. It will stop again when the freezer drawer is open and the light switch is pressed to turn off the light. The ice drawer was full but it had stopped making ice.

Here is the fix in less than 10 minutes using only a screwdriver.

  • Take out the two freezer baskets
  • Remove the freezer door from the two slide tracks.
  • Unplug the icemaker electric connection at the back wall. Depress the clips on the side of the plug and wiggle it loose.
  • There are 3 screws that attach the icemaker to the left freezer wall. Remove the lower screw and unscrew the top two about ½ way out.
  • Slide the icemaker up so the slots slip over the 2 screws.
  • Put the icemaker in the sink and run a bit of water on the frozen cubes until they fall out.
  • Take the screwdriver and check the water inlet hose/pipe for ice that obstructs the flow of water into the ice maker.
  • Re-mount using the 3 screws and plug in the electric connector. Make certain the water inlet tube is positioned thru the retaining hole before you remount the screws.
  • Replace freezer door and baskets.

I just had the same problem with the groaning freezer. I tried something much easier and it worked. I tapped very gently with a wooden spoon, my wife's suggestion, on and around the ice maker. Nothing happened until I closed the drawer and a few minutes later, I heard some ice fall into the tray and the groaning stopped. When you tap on the ice maker, do it gently or you might be buying a hew one.

Thanks! I just gave my ice maker a whack, an ice cube flew out, and the groaning stopped! I don't know if this is really a permanent fix but even if it's temporary, man-o-man, what a relief!

You guys are awesome. I reached under the ice maker and tapped around. I found two cubes of ice attached to two other cubes of ice. Once they fell down, the sound went away. My wife was ready to kill me.

I have very personal experience with this particular refig. I have literally seen this problem 40-50 times. when the refrig was manufactured they installed a hot gas line in the drain pan underneath the refrig. whne ever the compressor runs it casues a vibration in the pan. what needs to be done is the hot gas line needs to be adjusted and the pan isolated to prevent the noise. the reason it comes and goes is because its positional. in other words all the conditions have to be right to create teh noise. to test your self the next time it makes the noise try moving the refrig around and see if the noise goes away or gets worse. if you hany more questions shoot me a message and I'll get back to ya thanx Peyton.

Try pressing ultra ice and home while the refrigerator door is opened,or ultra ice and the refrigerator pad with the freezer opened. Hold for five seconds. Hope that works.

My Kenmore Trio sounds like it's breathing, creaking.

Wow, mine does too sometimes! Breathing and sighing noises. Like it's sniffing? Inhale and exhale... Really freaked me out, I thought some kind of large animal had chewed through the floorboards and was under the freezer! I looked all over and it isn't an animal, (i hope!!) but seems to be coming from inside the freezer compartment because it's louder with the door open. Maybe it's the defrost cycle or something?

Hello bigmikeegator
Welcome!

You said, you have the Kenmore Elite Trio Bottom Freezer. You moved your refrigerator to a new home and removed the bottom freezer door, but can not seem to figure out exactly how to put it back on correctly.

It's too much for me to tell you myself.
This is easier!

Groaning frig

BFULLAWAY had the answer, I believe. My ice maker does the same thing, groaning and creaking for a few seconds, stopping briefly, then starts creaking again. This is due to ice stuck inside and it will make no ice as a result. Usually I see a piece of ice protruding and knock it out. Happened recently, but I saw no ice. Took a cup of hot tap water (not boiling) and poured it into the compartments where cubes form. (Made sure ice tray was in place to catch water.) I banged on the side and a misshapened cube fell out. Creaking/groaning stopped and unit began to function normally.
