Gateway GT5240E desktop won't power up

We went to cut the computer on one day after using every day for just over a year, and only the fan was running. The blue light on the power button would not light, and it never cued the CPU to display anything. I called Gateway and they tried to be helpful, but the computer stopped working almost a year to the day we bought it - go figure! So, they suggested there was a power supply or motherboard issue and I should send the computer to them or take to Best Buy. I had a friend look at it and he saw that the power supply was bad, and he replaced it. The computer worked fine for a day, but then would not come on again unless there was significant down time - like a week. My friend now thinks the mother board has a short in it - does that sound logical? Any other help to provide? My hard drive and memory are intact, thank goodness. I just want my computer to work. Wow, I'm so glad I found this site.

I've had my Gateway FX 4710 UB003A desktop for about five months. I have had two serious problems with the computer.
(1.) The NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT overheats every time I try to play any of my games AT ANY RESOLUTION ON LOW QUALITY SETTINGS. Warcraft 3 will not even run properly. I bought this computer to play games! It sould be able to handle games from 6 years ago! I can fix this problem by removing the casing on the tower and placing an industrial fan next to it on HIGH.

(2.)Two months ago I tried to turn my computer on. The power light came on, the fan came on, and it gave me one short beep. Nothing else happened. I tried turning it on and off about 10 times until I got it to start up properly. I have had to deal with this problem every time I have tried to turn my computer on FOR THE LAST THREE MONTHS and Gateway support is USELESS. Luckily I have a 1 year warranty. I have talked to Gateway support recently and they suggested that I send the computer in to be "serviced." I doubt that they will successfully fix it if I send it in. Is there any way I can convince them to just give me a refund or at least a replacement computer?

You probably won't have much luck if getting a refund or a replacement. If Gateway is like HP, they will require you to send the computer in. This is what HP does: HP would FED EX you a box with a shipping paid label to put the computer in, only the tower, no cables or the keyboard/mouse etc. Fed Ex picks up the box and takes it to the nearest service centre. If they are unable to fix it, they would send you a refurbished one that comes with a 90 day warranty.

If you call Gateway, you can request to speak to a manager/supervisor and try to explain the multiple ongoing issues. I don't know Gateways policies, but with HP, your case could be escalated and a "higher authority" with more power of support, may be able to bend a little bit more to your request.

More like the video card. I now have the same problem after 5 years. I noticed that when I played games the computer would freeze up. Then it got to the point where it would not start. I replaced the power supply thinking it was the problem but agian it shut down and will not restart. I noticed the video card was very hot.

Gateway dx 4320 wont turn on

It could be a few things:

a faulty power switch - you say that you've changed the PSU, but did that include the switch?

it could also be a Faulty Motherboard or CPU. If either of them are fried, you won't see anything come on either.

I'd suggest checking the switch first because that's the cheapest and easiest to replace

Gateway GM 5072 won't turn on, it just flicker.

One of two things a clogged up CPU fan and block may be the contributor over heated and possibly fried the board. The other issue may be a bad power supply unit, replace the unit and reboot. John

Your cpu might have died. As the computer is starting tap F8 and choose last known good configuration to see if you can get it started.

Gateway GT5240E desktop won't power up

I know it sounds unlikely to work, but try this: Remove the motherboard from the chassis, remove the memory and cpu. Locate the chipset controllers. They are the two chips with the black heat sinks on them. Turn the motherboard over, and using a hair dryer on it's hottest setting, heat the underside of the motherboard directly beneath the chipset. Don't stay in one place for more than a minute or two, but stay in that gneral are of the motherboard for 10-15 minutes. After letting it cool, put everything back in, give it a minute to finish cooling, and fire it back up. The chipset is the source of the problem. As the board is used, apparently the chipset connections are compromised. heating them up from the underside seems to restore them. Worth a try, anyway. I'm writing this on a system I resurrected using this approach...
