HP Pavillion a1017c will not accept recovery disks provided by HP

My hard drive for my HP a1017c died. I installed a new Western Digital 250GB hard drive, formatted it with the data lifeguard tools disk, and attempted to utilized the HP recovery disks provided with my computer. The recovery starts, and when it gets to the recovery main screen, I "press any button" and get an error message that states that those disks are only for use in an HP Pavillion computer. Well duh, this is what it still is. It just has a new hard drive. How do I get past this?

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

In some instances parts of the recovery software or the computer identity are stored in a hidden partition of the original hard drive. Since the original hard drive is now faulty, there would be no way to recover them. One manner of addressing this issue is to use an OEM Windows installer. You can borrow one from a friend and use the CD key or Windows numbers printed on the sticker at the rear or side of your computer. Thereafter, drivers may be installed from the recovery CDs or downloaded from the HO Support page assuming that the networking is already functional.

Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

Well if this new hard disk you cannot recover the data because its stored in the old hard disk and data recovery is only possible in that hard disk ..You need to install fresh OS in the hard disk inorder to work on the computer ..

Good luck....

So, can you see it in My Computer? If yes, get your data off the drive and format it!

If you can't access your files, data recovery software can help.I used this one called Tenorshare Data Recovery to retrieve files off crashed HDD and it worked.
If needed, you can download it and scan your hard drive for free to preview whether your files can be recovered.Get it from http://www.any-data-recovery.com/product/datarecoveryprofessional.htm

While trying to install PATA 250GB HD (XP Pro) only 130GB recognized. Upgraded BIOS to v1.4 (latest) and assured by Toshiba that this would enable computer to handle 250GB. No such luck. Accessed BIOS...

According to the detailed specs on that model, it came with a 60GB ATA-5 EIDI hard drive. therefore, you can use any ATA compatible (ATA-5, ATA-6 or ATA-100) EIDE/IDE drive that has jumpers enabling you to configure the drive as "Master". Western Digital Blue Scorpio and Seagate Momentus lines both have models that will fit the bill. You can find those drives at your neighborhood BestBuy or Staples pretty easily. I don't know if the A25 BIOS supports 48-bit logical block addressing (LBA), in spite of what toshiba says, If it only supports 24-bit LBA the maximum drive size is 137GB. If it supports 48-bit LBA then you can go as high as you can find drives available; usually 500GB. I suspect that it supports 48-bit LBA because various online vendors list up to 250GB drives for that model. The most important thing about the drive, though, is that it MUST be jumperable as 'master'. A cable select only drive won't work. Both the Western Digital and Seagate EIDE models have jumpers. hope this helps but if you need anything else just ask:)

What is the max hdd capacity I can install in a HP ZD8000 laptop?

Your computer uses ATA drives which topped out around 250MB simply because manufactures switched over to SATA drives. It is a pain to change out disks on laptops since you can only have one internal drive. You then have to reload everything.
Here is one I found: Western Digital Scorpio Blue WD2500BEVE 250GB 5400 RPM 2.5" ATA-6 Internal Notebook Hard Drive -Bare Drive
  • 250GB
  • 5400 RPM 8MB Cache
  • ATA-6

I'd consider one of the external USB disks instead to store your data, pictures, etc. You could then put it on your desktop or on a new notebook.

It is taking forever to use the recovery DVD to intall programs an a brand new Western Digital Scorpio 250 GB hard drive I bought for my Toshiba M35X-S114. BIOS doesn't detect the hard drive which is...

If it's a 250GB, the recovery DVD needs to format this drive (insofar as I know, Toshiba's recovery disks never uses quick format) - so .... yeah! It'll take a couple of hours just to prep the hard drive before the actual recovery imaging begins, and that's assuming that the hard drive formatted without errors.

If the hard drive has errors (bad sectors), it really could stretch out the total time. I've done a recovery on a hard drive that contained 100MB worth of bad sectors and it took an entire two days to put an image on it. Why'd I do it? I justed wanted to know how long it was gonna take...

HP Pavillion DV9000t ''Unrecoverable error has occured''

The recovery disk is defective so the install is bad. Install using another disk (even a generic retail one of the same type will do) and your key.

I have a hp pavillion ze5385us hard drive making all kinds weird sounds with stop:0x0000008E and vertical lines in center of screen besides a new hard drive can this be fixed andis this worth fixing?

You may have two problems, or just one.

The disk-drive is "failing" -- if it is "misreading" the "wallpaper" picture, then the viewed wallpaper will look to be "corrupted".

Backup all your files, to DVD-writable or USB memory-sticks,
before the disk-drive completely "dies".

Given that you have a "Athlon 64 3800+", it's worth replacing the disk-drive, reinstalling Windows, and restoring your files from your backup.
Much cheaper to replace the disk-drive than to buy a new computer.

Upgraded hard drive, from 80gb to 250gb. I have had to reload my os twice. it appears that the bios is not recognizing my hd. a friend said that the inspiron 6000 does not do well with a hd bigger then...

I dont think we can use a hard disk of 160gb in an inspiron 6000. and make sure you bought a ATA hard drive and not a SATA drive. For the Western digital try to reinstall XP and install the device drivers before installing application s/w.
