Why did you update the BIOS? (Just wondering)

  • BillW50 May 11, 2010

It depends... some BIOS manufactures allow it and some doesn't. What is the manufacturer's name of the BIOS?

Open your case look on the motherboard find what looks like a big watch battery carefully remove the battery leave it out for about a minute and put it back in. This will clear CMOS and restore BIOS to factory settings. Hope this helps

The only real way (using WinXP) is to use recovery discs and reinstall from scratch. You can also just uninstall all the additional programs you've installed as well as your user files. that may take a bit longer than using the recovery CD's. if you're trying to boot from the recovery CD press F2 at boot (or whatever key to enter bios) and change your boot order to start with the CD/DVD drive.

How to use System Recovery console (steps)

Starting a Recovery

Turn on the computer and immediately begin pressing the F10 key repeatedly until a Recovery Screen appears.
You can also start a recovery from recovery discs, or from Windows. For more information refer to Performing a Full System Recovery in Windows XP .

Recovery is taking too long
If your computer stops responding after using the recovery program, do the following:

NOTE:If the computer appears to have stopped responding after restarting from a recovery, please wait, it may take several hours or longer to complete the initial Windows XP setup process, especially if a recovery was run from a recovery disc set sent by HP. A Standard recovery may also take longer, depending on how many files are stored in user accounts (like in My Documents ).

1 Exit the stalled recovery process by pressing the POWER button on the PC until the power turns off, this takes approximately five seconds.
2 Before recovering, disconnect personal media drives, printers, scanners, cameras, camera-type memory cards, and other devices that did not originally come with the PC.
3 If you are using recovery discs, be aware of the following items:
4 If you created the recovery discs using Recovery CD Creator, be sure to run the recovery from the same drive that you used to create the discs.
5 Clean the discs with a soft, clean, lint-free cloth wetted with distilled water. Wipe from the center of the disc to the outside edge. You may also use disc cleaning kits or disc restoration kits from your local computer store. These kits produce better results than using cloth and water.
6 You may also use available CD/DVD Drive cleaning kits to clean the laser reading lens of the CD or DVD drive.
Try running a full system recovery again from the hard drive by turning the on the computer and pressing the F10 key until a Recovery Screen appears. This performs the recovery from the hard drive.
7 If the recovery stops when recovering from the hard drive, use the section Disc errors occur during the recovery process to eliminate errors on the drive. Try recovering again after the disk errors are removed.

You might have another part that has gone bad. Check the RAM and see if it gives you any problems.

There is a program call mem test that you can burn to a CD and test your memory. But if your no longer able to get to the bios:

For the first one, you need to enter BIOS and set the HDD settings. Maybe you can automatic detect it once and then the system knew where to load system from. If it can see the hard disk and reads it but no operating system found, then you may need to check the operating system on your hard disk.
For the second one, I do think it is better to upgrade to a upper level OS such as Windows 7. While you have Vista you will have better deal with Windows 7. If you do have a agreement with Microsoft to have newer OS for free in a certain period, you can get Windows 7 for free. If you don't have that agreement, you can get Upgrade version of windows 7 with a huge discount if you have Vista.
You can actually back up your data to an wim file on vista and restore all the data and settings after the upgrading. But be sure to keep a full backup of your hard disk and everything just in case.
You can enter BIOS and make sure booting from CD first. Then there is a key you need to press very early in the booting process to launch the recovery. There is also a factory default restore you can use. Did you call HP to find out what the key is and how to use factory default restoration? You can always plug the hard disk to other computer to back up the data and then restore to factory default and put the data back.

I need to wipe my acer aspire pc with vista. Do I need a recovery disc I do not remember it coming with one?

You can do it without disk to but for it should be hiddden partition is installled when your vista is load first time. For that
There is one option in bios D2d enable it .then save settings.
For enter bios when you power up the computer press F1 or F2 or "del" key then go to main menu find D2d
then enable then save and exit.
Then when it restart press ALT +F2
then you see recovery mode follow the procedure and wiped acer.
But if there is not any recoverry then you need recovery disk.

Let me know if you need more assistanse.
Thanks.

Setting up a new hard disk and operating system on an Acer Power SC

There should be more than one disk, as the other will be drivers, all you need to do is press F2 or Del to get into your pc's bios settings and change the first boot device to your cd drive, insert your acer disc into the drive, then save the bios settings, restart the pc ,then, when prompted on screen to press enter to boot from cd; do so.

You should then follow instructions to set up windows on the 'C' drive as is default and it may need to reformat in NTFS.
