Battery Backup/Surge Protector Question

I recently purchased a laptop to replace my destop and have a question about a power strip.  I was wondering if I could plug a plain power strip (no surge protection) into the battery backup just to have an outlet closer to the laptop to be able to plug in more conveniently. I wouldn't be plugging anything else into it but just using it as an outlet closer to the laptop.  I know you arent supposed to do this in some cases.  What do you think?

Considering the low draw of power you intend for the UPS it will work well. I have two monitors on a strip plugged into UPS along with desktop, routers and modems, UPS handles all well, it's just shortens battery backup times. Have had to power down from outages several times without any probs.

Power strip / surge protector is old - should I replace it or is it ok?

Power strips don't typically go bad. If you are using for surge protection on expensive equipment, it's worth purchasing a new one. I highly recommend checking out Monoprice.com

It is probably a bad battery. They usually don't last much longer than 2-3 years. You could try replacing the battery, but I would suggest just replacing the whole UPS with a new model.

Wont turn on

1.Plug the Inspiron's AC power cord into a power outlet and try to power on the laptop again. By far the most common cause of a laptop's not powering on is a dead battery.
2.Plug the AC adapter into a different outlet to check for a "dead" outlet. If you have the cable plugged into a surge protector, plug the cord into a different slot on the surge protector or "bypass" the surge protector by plugging the cable into an electrical outlet. If the Inspiron now powers on, replace the surge protector or have an electrician examine any "dead" outlets in the home.
3.Open the battery bay on the underside of the Inspiron by sliding the battery bay latch release lock upward and the battery bay latch release to the right. Once both latches are released, the battery bay should open.
4.Remove the battery.
5.Purchase a compatible replacement battery for laptop. Be aware that using an incompatible battery can cause damage to your computer. If you have any doubt as to compatibility, the best option is to purchase the replacement battery directly from your laptop's manufacturer.
6.Install the new battery by following the battery-removal procedure in reverse order. Once the new battery is installed, try again to power on the laptop. If there is still no power, seek professional repair advice.

I hope you find it very helpful.

Yes, it can. I have replaced more than a couple of poorly made Chinese gel-cells after fairly brief service.
Also, you can extend your UPS's service time before the battery is depleted by turning off the monitor and settings the Power Management settings to power-down hard drives after 10-20 minutes.
In my experience, the ratings on UPS systems is wildly optimistic regarding their backup capabilities.
Also; the protection against lines surges caused by even distant lightning strikes is fairly minimal.
If this is in your home, you might consider installing a 'whole house' surge arrester. Depending on the maker, they offer up to $10,000 in damage insurance to cover any losses not prevented by their devices.
The plug-in strips with 'surge protection' have a 50 cent component in them to clamp spikes to ~200VAC and these even get tired with repeated surges and eventually become totally ineffective.
If the battery checks out OK, the circuitry responsible for switching from AC line to backup mode may have already been damaged during the storm.
Switching to the 'surge protector' mode really only provides mildly conditioned AC line and involves no active electronics.

Wont power up, after we had a power surge. It was connected to power strip surge protector, but has not been able to power up since. can it be a fuse problem, or more? magnavox dvd recorder mwr10d6

Apower surge can travel quicker than a surge protector can activate. And a replacement fuse may not fix your DVD. On one occasion I did replace a fuse in one of these after a power surge and the DVD/VCR did comeback to life. You may try...but the odds are against you and you will have to purchase a new one!

I have a gateway desktop computer. Recently moved

Before you actually replace the power supply, check some other things first:
1. Wall socket
2. Power strip/surge protector
3. Power cable
4. On the back of the computer, where the power cable plugs into, is the red switch set to 115? It should be 115.
5. Make sure that the power cable is not connected to a regular extension cord. Power cable must plug directly into a surge protector that is not daisy-chained to another power strip, surge protector, or normal (household) extension cord. Surge protector must be directly plugged into wall socket.

If none of the above solve the problem, open up the case and ensure that all power connections are secure. Also check ALL other components' connections. Any loose connections can cause problems for you.

If everything is secure and the problem persists, replace the power supply.

Dynex Te685avr backup battery doesnt work

If the battery outlets do not work, typically the Dynex TE685AVR UPS (battery backup) just needs a new battery. These batteries usually last 3-5 years.

The model of the battery is a WKA12-7.5F2 and can be purchased at: http://www.replacementupsbattery.com/Product_pages/wka12-75f2.html.
