Recovery Disks No longer come with HP Desktops/Laptops. There is a built-in program in your Program Files that allows the user to create their own set of recovery disks. But you may not need to use the recovery disks to bring the computer back to the manufacturer state. All the Windows XP and programs that come with your computer are on the hard drive on a separate D:RECOVERY partition you can see in My Computer. But you should create the recovery disks in case the Recovery Partition built on your hard drive becomes corrupted.

Several ways to recover your Laptop and how to create a set of Recovery Disks: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00608578&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&rule=21872&product=500508

Without the Recovery disks:

Right after you turn on your computer, start Tapping the F11 key. Shortly after the HP Logo screen disappears you should enter the System Recovery.

Click next and on the next screen they should be some information about System Recovery. After each screen that you click next (Go Slow so you don't miss it) One of the screens should have 2 options near the top:

System Restore
Advanced Option

At the bottom of this screen will be another Next Button. Do Not click next right away because this will start a "Non-Destructive" Recovery where the computer will only restore Windows files to the factory default but the addition data and programs you or someone may have put on the computer will still be on the computer after this recovery as well as they may not work properly since all the Windows files have been defaulted back to factory settings.

At the top, click Advanced. You should then get an option to perform the "Destructive" Recovery which will recover the computer completely back to Manufacturer Default. Choose the Destructive recovery and click next.

This process can take awhile, let it finish to completion (Do not turn off your computer or stop this process in the middle of the recovery, or you WILL need disks to recover the Laptop)

After it finishes, the computer will prompt you to reboot. Reboot the computer, it will boot you into a new Windows where it will do some final configuration and will be back to the manufacturer default.

Remember, this will wipe out all your data, so if you have anything of importance on the computer, Back up the data first, and its recommened that you do regular backups when the computer is working as well.

Hi. Try to do a system restore. Please click on the link below for step by step instructions on how to do system restore for your Dell laptop.
http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/kcs/document?docid=125982#Issue9

Try the next oldest restore point until the issue is resolved. Any software installed after the selected restore point needs to be reinstalled.
If system restore still doesn't work, run the "Pre-Boot System Assessment (PSA) Diagnostics and Error Codes For Dell Computers", you may click the link below to go directly to the support site, it contains instructions in running PSA Diagnostics and Error Code List with possible fixes.http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/kcs/document?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&docid=266787#Issue2

Have a look in your manual, it will let you know where the rescue partition is, indeed if it is still intact.

Can u tell me how to re-set my laptop

Place your restore disc you received with your purchase of this lap top. Then follow the on screen directions. I'm assuming now that you do not have a restore disc you can go online and download it if it is available or contact customer support they will provide you one for your lap top. This is what I would do? John

My Iphone charges at my partner's lap top at a meeting I'm in right now, but the same cord will not charge from my satellite lap top. Is there a setting I need to address? It has worked in the past....

Just do a System Restore in order to undo the changes of the settings of your computer for Plug and Play. By doing a System Restore just go to START >> ACCESSORIES >> SYSTEM RESTORE >> System Restore. And please select the date that it was working okay before. And on that regards your laptop will restart on its own. Thank you.

Press and hold the "Ctrl" and "F11" keys simultaneously when the Dell splash screen appears. The "Dell PC Restore by Symantec" window will appear. Click "Restore."
Just make sure you have saved all your data before doing that.
