This could be an issue with the circuit board.I am facing a similar problem & shown it for repairing. And facing issue in sourcing
the IC. Seagate is giving support for maxtor after it has taken over.
Data recovery is possible only if the circuit is working.
Can you describe the drive in more detail?
Have you tried all other USB ports on the machine? Have you tried this on a friends PC? Does it work? Can you plug a mouse or keyboard into the USB port to test the port? Try another USB cable, borrow from a friend, etc.
Can you see the drive in "My Computer"?
If so, right click and try Open, if not try Format (choose NTFS Quick Format).
External Power supply or USB powered? An enclosure? Any lights come on? Any noise, like a motor spinning up?
Try booting the PC without the drive attached, then attach only after fully booted. Can you see it now in My Computer?
If none of this helps, please write back with a little more detail.
Simple, you have to format it by selecting Dos Drive which supports NTFS format.
or else try other option which is to format it in PC computer be sure you will select the NTFS format not FAT32. Im sure you can use it now to both Mac and PC.
This is the maxtor 4 installation utility:
MaxBlast 4 is a one-step, ATA/IDE hard drive installation utility. MaxBlast 4 makes hard drive installations and upgrades hassle-free for novices and professionals alike by automatically identifying, partitioning, and formatting any Maxtor ATA or SATA hard drive, making it data-ready in minutes. MaxBlast 4 replaces all previous versions of MaxBlast and MaxBlast Plus.
The PowerMax utility is designed to perform diagnostic read/write verifications on Maxtor and Quantum hard drives. These tests will determine hard drive integrity. The PowerMax utility is effective on all ATA (IDE) hard drives with a capacity greater than or equal to 500 MB. Maxtor recommends the use of this utility for troubleshooting potential hard drive problems. These problems include, but are not limited to the following:
* Potential hard drive surface problems (e.g., bad clusters, bad sectors, partitioning/formatting problems, etc.).
* Drive recognition problems (e.g. hard drive that is not recognized by the operating system).
* Software removal.
