Question about Sony KP-57WS500 57" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Sony rear projection screen is red then tv shuts off

We have a 6 year old Sony KP-57WS500. The screen suddenly went red while watching then shut off. When you turn the tv on the screen is red with some arc lines, then all red but you can make out the picture underneath and can hear sound until it shuts off. The timer/standby led blinks. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

cbuchin- We have the EXACT same TV and the same thing happened to us on Tuesday of this week (Feb 11, 2009). The TV is about 6 yrs old also. Our TV goes completely blue and shuts off. Prior to Christmas we were having a problem with the color and we had a repairman in who was able to fix that for $75 by modifying some dials. We tried to see if we could replicate what was done prior, but it seems like they are separate problems. What did you do? We are bummed about having to buy a new TV. There is expense in the TV and in getting the space re-built / re-worked to accomodate the flat panels with no speaker system. Let us know what you decided to do when you have a moment.

Its failure of Red Gun in TV.
Red Gun replacement will cost you much (if available some where) and new TV is better option.

Can be 1 of 2 things. 1st the red tube just needs the voltage to it turned down. In the front of TV (you have to remove the lower front half of TV to access it) is a plastic square with 6 knobs. The from left to right top knobs control focus for blue, green red. The bottom knobs control voltage to each tube in same order (so lower right knob for red) turn SLOWLY to left to reduce voltage until excessive red and lines go away. If you over turn left or right set will turn off. If that does not fix it or if lines reappear then option 2 is that red picture tube is failing outright and needs replacement.

My tv too had a blue screen problem. Then it started to shut down after staying on for less than a minute. I thought that I would with a huge repair bill but I followed the directions at this link: http://www.somelifeblog.com/2007/06/sony-projection-tv-red-line-repair.html and now my tv works perfectly.

Sony 57 in Rear Projection TV

If the picture is playing fine and you notice that the background is getting more and more red, until it is too red and the set shuts down, it could be that the red screen control is set just a bit too high. If this is the case, you can probably correct this yourself. If you are watching a perfect picture and then it suddenly flashes a very bright red, with thin red lines in the pictureand then shuts down, it usually means that the red picture tube has developed a short in it, between the cathode and heater. A good tech might be able to remove the short by arcing, but if the short persists then the red tube will have to be replaced. Either way, this is something that should only be done by a qualified tech.
