Question about HP 1040 Plain Paper Inkjet Fax

Stretched text on faxes

Hi there, I am a business owner and continue to receive faxes daily. There is often stretched text on the documents sent to me. I am a smart ring on my line for faxes only... I checked with the phone line to see if there was static/noise on the line and it was clear.... I done a realignment of ink.... I checked the paper... I have asked for the sender to send 3 times today and the same thing happens but in different locations on the document obviously. If I pick up my handset on the fax machine, it is NOISEY however if I pick up the phone line anywhere in the house, it is quiet. I have tried changing jacks and the same thing happens wheter the machine is set for TEL, FAX or DR. Can you please offer some further troublshooting suggestions as my customers are not happy with me today. Regards,

In my experience, this type of problem is on the sender's end and not the receivers. We have sent faxes before and while they are sending, the paper on our end misfeeds and the received copy on the other end is stretched and unreadable. One way to determine this is to have a few different people from different locations send you faxes. If all the faxes have this problem, then it is a good bet it is a problem on your end. If not, then it is probably a problem with this particular sender's fax machine. I hope this helps.

We received a cople of faxes from different sources. There are lines down all the pages except the top (there is readable text there) and the lines are from the letters (like they have been stretched) like...

That sounds exactly like the sending fax is document is stalling, so a single line across the page gets sent for a few seconds. You can easily check your own machine's scan and print quality by putting anything in the doc feeder and copying it.
To test the print section alone, use the menus (or I think your model has a separate Report button) to print out the Help list.
It's possible that both your sending correspondents have slick, hard document feeder rollers, but you'd think they would have heard complaints from others. I can't think of anything at your end that would stretch out your prints, and there's no Bulletin about it on Brother's service website.
On the off chance you have a glitch in your machine's memory fouling it up, you can clear it out. This page has instructions for clearing out only the image memory (91) or all of it (01). It may or may not help, but only takes a couple of minutes to try.

Cannot sent fax because document too long

If you can copy the document, then you can send it BUT the receiving fax will probably have restricted length fax pages to prevent jammed documents at the sending end causing the receiver to use all the paper. If you have access to a service manual you can restrict the length of faxes sent and received on your machine. But it may be the receiver with the restriction.

Cannot receive faxes

Faxes cannot be received but they can be sent Review the following information to determine why faxes are not being received.
  • Phone company services: Do you have any of the following telephone line services from your telephone company: Voice Mail, Privacy Block, Security Screen, Anonymous Call Rejection, or Privacy Manager? These phone services are meant to prevent unwanted calls, but they will aslo stop faxes. Contact your telephone company for their recommended solution for receiving faxes on the same line with these services.
  • If you wish to receive faxes automatically, verify that automatic answering is enabled on models that have an Auto Answer button, or that the Rings to Answer setting is set to a number equal to or larger than one for models that do not have an Auto Answer button. On models with an Answer Mode setting, it should be set to Fax, FaxTel, or AnswerMachine depending on your setup.
  • If you have a HP PSC 2200 or an Officejet 6100 that interrupts calls or will not receive faxes, download and install the HP Firmware update for these products.
    1. Click here to go to the Drivers and Support page .
    2. Type in your model number (HP PSC 2210xi for example).
    3. Click the search arrow to the right of the text entry box. You may be asked to select your product from a list of models.
    4. On the software download page, select your operating system version.
    5. Locate and select the firmware update.
    6. Follow the directions to download and install the update
  • If an answering machine is connected to the same line, fax reception problems can occur. These problems may be corrected by changing settings or phone line connections. For more information on using a TAM or distinctive ring service, go to Using the HP All-in-One and Fax Products with a Telephone Answering Machine (buu04072) (in English).
  • If you have a PBX phone system, or an ISDN or DSL modem connected to the line, there may be some phone line configuration problems. Fax machines are analog devices and cannot be used on a digital phone service such as those used in many businesses (PBX systems). Install an analog phone line for a fax machine. Refer to document Using an HP All-in-One or Fax Product on a PBX, ISDN, or DSL Phone System (buu50333) (in English) to learn how to correct these problems.
  • If the problem still exists, continue troubleshooting in the Faxes cannot be sent or received or the problem cannot be determined section of this document.

What's up; could it be the phone line?

yup, noise coming across line will do that, have it checked. Could be sending partys line being noisy too, you could also hook up a phone and listen for crackles/noise on line.

99 percent chance it is noisy/poor phone line.
