Comprssor hard to turn when cold

My compressor has difficulty starting when cold and the belt burns a little until it starts spinning freely. Can I use a lighter weight oil than 30 for winter use?

Air condition motor not going on

check to see if the fan is running if not it has frozen up over the winter. turn off fuses to a/c unit then try to turn fan by hand,if not soak down fan bearings with penetrating oil like PB Blaster keepmoving fan blade back and forth until it spins freely. Then try turning on the power to a/c unit if motor then turns fan freely , shut it down again and use a good coat of a-1 motor oil (ELECTRICAL) on the fan brgs. This should get you through for another year or so. On the other hand if fan will not spin by the motor now but spins by hand then the fan motor is bad.

Belts keep breaking 919.167600

If the motor is breakng belts that fast, most liketly your pump parts aren't turning freely. This is usually caused by a damaged bearing(s). With the belt off, all pump parts should turn freely and smoothly by hand with some more effort needed during the compression stroke. Check for smooth operation of the flywheel bearing, the piston rod bearing, and the piston/cylinder operation. If any of the bearings are damaged and hindering the turning of the flywheel, the motor will burn through your belt.

Campbell Hausfeld VS5006 Compressor runs slowly

Rmove the drive belt and check the motor. It should turn very freely by hand and if turned on should start up easily. If it turns hard check the armature bearings if it starts slowly but turns OK after you give it a push, you have a bad start capacitor. If the motor is OK check the pump. It should turn fairly freely except on the compression stroke where you should feel slightly more pressure is needed to turn it. If you can't turn the flywheel or it turns very hard, you should check the connecting rod to crank shaft joint and crank shaft bearings. These usually go bad if there is low or no oil in the crank case.

Motor hums till reset swithch pops/just put a new pressure switch on today:does the same thing/motor turns freely and oil level is good/no wiring issues visible

With no air in the tank, and the motor will not start indicates that the starter capacitor may have failed or the bearings of the motor are allowing the rotor/armature to lock against the stator. If your compressor has a belt, remove the belt and try the motor. If it still does not turn, try spinning the motor then turn on while still spinning (use caution). If continues to turn, most likely capacitor, if it stops /locks when you turn-on while spinning, check bearings. If your compressor is pump/motor together suspect bearing on the pump side of motor. Some motors have a primary start winding as well as a run winding. Inside the motor, there are contacts that my have welded together. Good luck

The Electric motor does not have enough torque to start compressor. It is hooked up to 230V with 40 amp single phase. checked voltage with meter so I know it has enough voltage.

Does it trip the breaker or does the motor just hum and not turn the compressor? The motor may need a start capacitor. Do not keep tryin to start you can burn out the start winding on the motor.
TURN OFF POWER AND LOCK OUT.... try and take the belts off (if it has belts)of the motor and compressor and make sure both turn freely. IF THEY TURN FREELY THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE MOTOR. You said voltage, wire size and breakers are the right size.
Hope this helps you with your problem...Jim...please leave a comment

The motor runs fine with the belt off but when the compressor is on line the motor hums and trips the house breaker.

Turn the compressor pump pulley by hand (with belt off) and air pressure in the tank. It should be very easy to turn. If it is hard to turn, evaluate the check valve for leak. If no leak examine crank bearings for damage. Repair as needed. If easy to turn fault is with motor. Check amp draw with belt removed. When the motor comes on, it should draw about 15 amps and drop lower. The motor should start and reach full rpm in a split second. It should start with a bang and run smoothly with-out getting hot and only pull low amount of amps. If slow start and high amp draw, check capacitor/s and or start winding switch inside of motor. Sometimes the start switch will burn the contacts and give trouble. If both capacitors test within 95% of value and start switch appears to be good, look for damaged copper windings. Windings will be discolored or burned and the tie strings binding the windings will be melted. Replace as needed. Good holidays

I have ingrosoll rand t30 model 2340 motor is working very hard to spin the compressor sound of compressor is different to , rubber burning smell is also there , but belt is in good shape it is not loose.

May have a bearing going bad. Remove the v-belt and turn the motor by hand. Does it turn hard or produce an unusual noise. If so you have a bad motor bearing. If not turn the pump by hand. If it turns hard or produces an unusual noise you have a bad bearing in the pump. Also move the pump fly wheel up and down , left and right. If you can move it the front bearing is bad.

Electric motor will not start . just grrrrs and trips breaker. was ok 3 days ago. only use compressor occasionally

May or may not have a start capicitor on the motor
Sounds like either the start cap is bad or the motor has seized up
Try turning the motor by hand after removing the drive belt it should turn freely

I have a craftsman air compressor (small) with 2 wheels on end, my probelm is when i plug it up it buzzes only, will not start motor, what could be problem

unplug it and see if you can turn the motor pulley by hand, it should turn freely. If it does, check to see if the motor runs with the belt off. If the motor runs by itself then either the belt was too tight or the compressor is seized.

Compressor hard to start when cold

sounds more like the pressure relief valve that takes the air pressure off the compressor upon shut down so when it re-starts there is no pressure until the motor gets a start this is known as a unloader valve and is usually a small brass valve that looks like a fitting and will hiss on shutdown,if it sticks the motor trys to start with the load of the air pressure on it and slips the belt due to load
