Question about Canon PIXMA MP470 All-in-One Printer

My printer quit working and is showing error 5100. I have tried everything and still can't get it to work

I changed my ink cartridges (This model really uses up the ink). Clerk told me to get another printer OR to install an empty color ink cartridge so that it can't add color ink to the black ink when printing in black only. I never used color, but the printer ran out of color ink anyway.

When I installed the new ink cartridges, which I have done many times, I got the flashing lights and error code 5100. I have tried and tried with cleaning, shutting down, vacuuming, researching the net, etc., to be able to use the printer. I want to do my taxes!

I also have a code 5100 error showing on my MP470. After I hit the print button it stops after running for maybe 1 or 2 seconds. I have to remove the paper from the back. It always shows smudged ink and crumpling in upper left hand corner.

I contacted Canon tech support and they answered with some instructions to see if it would correct the problem. They said if it didn't correct it, it was a hardware problem and since I was under warranty I could exchange it....for a refurbished model. I have sent a request for an exchange. So far no answer back.

Service error 5100 on Canon IP 2770

Hello thanks for using FixYa

Error 5100 means that the cartridge can not be detected by the printer. Actually the printer is not actually loading the cartridge and showing you the error 5100.

To solve these follow the following steps. I hope it works
  • Turn off printer
  • Remove both the cartridges from the printer
  • Use a clothe moistened with alcohol to clean the surface contact on the cartridges where the terminals inside the printers touches
  • Return the cartridges
  • Turn on the printer.
Error will be removed
I hope this solution will helpful for you

Getting a 5100 error . put in new ink and camera card it works till hit print then shows an error -5100

5100 means the carriage is not moving freely because of paper scraps inside or grease or ink on the encoder strip behind the carriage. you can try cleaning the strip gently with just a damp Q-tip, moist with water, and look inside for scraps or things that don't belong.

Canon PIXMA MP450 "Servic Error 5100"

Try this... it worked on my MP450... Turn the printer on and open the lid, it shows the cartridges. Now let the cartridges settle to the left. You can notice that the cartridges run on a metal belt. It might be dirty, mine showed a black stripe on it. Take a cloth, a cleenex will be fine and clean it up. Move the cartridges to the right (force them with your hand) and clean the part of the belt left behind them. Now turn it off, close it up and turn it back on. It should work
