Question about RIM BlackBerry 8800
Any hope to recovering from this without having to do a fresh re-install? Havent backed up in about 1-2 weeks, hoping not to lose data.

Here is how I was finally able to get my phone to work.
When the battery was very low, the phone would no longer activate the radio function. I found that when the radio was not trying to connect to the network, I could enter my password and adjust my network settings.
I thought the issue may have had to do with the "data services" function so I diasbled this function.... and the phone worked with this function off (after a light recharge).
Just to confirm I had found the cause of the lock-up, I enabled the data services again and the phone immediately locked again.
Here's how I was able to work around it.
Go to the "manage connections" icon and open it up. Select "mobile network options" and the top selection should be to turn the "data services" fuction on or off. What I found was that once this was off, the phone worked just fine but obviously all access to e-mail and other web-services was shut down. At least I had my phone......
If you are not able to get to the data services area because the phone keeps locking up at the "error code 348" screen (grey screen of death), then you can try this also if you have your security on the phone set to allow phone calls while its still locked.
Hit the "R" button to reset the blackberry or if this doesn't work, remove and reinsert the battery and it will reset. Note, you may have to use the "on" button to get the phone to turn back on after removing and reinstalling the battery. As the phone is going through the process of starting back up, and before it goes back to the error code 348 screen, you can do the following....
At least this worked on my unit.
At the Verizon screen which was the last screen to appear before the phone would go back into error mode, I was able to select the option to "place call".
I only had about 10 seconds to do this and get a call going before the phone would lock up again so choose a number and call it quickly....
For some unknown reason, the phone will not lock up at the "error code 348 screen" while a call is in progress. So I called the office and then hit the "select" button (one with all the little dots on it next to the mouse ball) and chose the option to "unlock" the phone. Once unlocked I could get to the "manage connections" icon as noted above and choose to shut down the "data services" function again.
Sorry for the long-winded explanation.
This was a major headache for me when I arrived in Puerto Rico and could not access any numbers on my phone because it kept going back to the error code screen every time I reset it. When I figured out that it was simply a limitation or issue with the data services function and I could use the phone and access my call logs, contacts list, etc., even without e-mail this was a great success.

As a side note, if you don't have your phone set to "allow calls when locked" in the security section of your settings in the options section.
If all else fails, you can get to area where you can unlock your phone if it sits long enought at the error code 348 screen. The unit will get to a point where the battery is too low to allow calls but you can still unlock it and maniupulate the settings. If the phone is totally dead, just charge it for a few minutes and adjust the settings before it charges enough to try to reconnect to the network.
