This occurs when the incorrect video driver has been installed or only the standard vga video driver was installed.
You can download the motherboarddrivers from Intel WEB site. Select your model motherboard/device, and makesure you select the Windows XP or Vista version of the drivers that matchesyour Windows operating system. How to change your Windows 7 display settings

In Windows 7 there are serveral ways to get to your display settings. I have detailed them below in options so that you can access them as needed.

Option 1

Right click on your desktop and select "Screen Resolution"

Option 2

1. Right click on your desktop and select "Personalize"

2. Next click on "Display"

3. Click on "Adjust resolution"

Option 3

1. Click the Start button and click Control Panel

2. Next click on "Display"

3. Click on "Adjust resolution"
Once you are in the Screen Resolution you can set the resolution you want.

Note the resolution that is set now is a wide screen resolution. If you have a standard monitor the equivalent resolution would be 1280 x 1024.

After you have made the needed changes click on Apply then OK to save your changes.

Note if you are still have trouble with your monitor displaying right you may need to install the monitor drives. Windows is not going to have the actual drivers for all monitors. So in picture below you will see where is shows "Generic PnP Monitor" this means that the computer is using a generic driver. You can access this screen by clicking on "Advance Setting".

If you need to install the monitor drivers the link below will take you through the steps of installing the monitor drivers.

Why does my monitor keeps adjusting to the 4bit color only and I can not adjust the resolution

Color bit depthe is not the monitor problem, it is the video card problem, make sure you have correct video card driver installed.

I am unable to adjust the screen resolution of my computer

I'm assuming you went into the desktop properties and went to setting and attempted to adjust it there. It also says it's in 16bit color mode and won't let you change it to 32bit.

This is usually cause by not having an updated video driver. Try looking up the model of your machine and download a video driver for xp and install it.

It should display fine after you do that.

Toshiba Qosmio notebook screen is booting up in 4bit mode instead of 32 and has lines across the screen.

right click on the desktop>properties and you should be able to adjust them. Set the resolution at 800x600 first before you adjust the colour depth. Then you can adjust the resolution etc properly.

Windows has lost the display driver for your particular card. You will need to determine what the card is (it may say when you first start the machine) and redownload the drivers for it.
