I don't know how I / it fixed itself but it works fine now.
    Sorry this isn't muck help

Something that worked for me, I opened the Conon MX310. took out both cartridges, and for 10 seconds I held the Reset. put the cartridges back in, closed the lid, and again, for another 10 seconds held the reset. SLOW seconds. this reset, ink levels recognised,, and it's working as it should be.

How do you turn off the ink status monitor????????? I've been through the entire array of "Menu" options and there is nothing apparent. I have the same "col vol unknown" error, but I'm using a real Canon printer cartridge. Needless to say, I'm frustrated beyond compare.

Turn off the ink status monitor. You'll know it's time to refill again when your printing starts to fade, streak, or discolour. It seems like there in no way to reset the ink levels.

Cannon MP220 displays colour ink vol unknown

For the Canon Pixma MP220, I kept getting a message saying "Col Ink Vol Unknown" after refilling and replacing a cartridge. After reading some of the other responses it appears as though Canon cartridges contain internal chips that prevent you from using them after they have been refilled. However, I tried a few things and this is what worked for me.

1. Insert your refilled Canon cartridge like normal, close the lid.
2. The Error message "Col Ink Vol Unknown" should still appear.
3. Use the "Menu" button to scroll to "Maintenance" (press "Menu" 8 times to find it), then press "OK" to conduct a "Nozzle Check" and a coloured test will print out.
4. The Error message will still appear but you will be able to print using colour AND with black and white. For some silly reason the Canon Pixma MP220 won't print using black and white if there is no coloured ink...

Hope this helps!

Ink Low message after installing new cartridge

There is no way to actually "reset" the counter. IF your MP170 has a RESUME/CANCEL button, Press and hold this button for about 7 seconds to bypass the counter (The PAGE FEED button will work for some other models). If your printer doesn’t have this button, you may bypass the counter by turning the printer OFF. Now hold down the RESET and turn the printer ON. Keep holding the RESET until the printer boots and initializes. When the display says, "INK VOL UNKNOWN" you may release the RESET and begin printing in the usual manner. You may need to start the printer in this manner each time, or the printer may remember this setting. Canon was experimenting during this time so some of the same models have different buttons and bypass tricks. Hope this helps.

I hope this helps you.

Canon MP180 Ink Problem

lads ye're all I work in an 'ink place' and the u051 fault is a fault indicating that the offending cartridge is electrically dead, this is caused by the clever little program in the canon machine that writes info to the cartridge to make it'dead' so it cant be re-used ! possible solution is to get refilled before printer thinks it empty !!
