Dell Inspiron 1150 will not start windows

This computer was working fine then one day it seemed to BRICK.

it is giving me the following message:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the oringinal Setup CD-ROM.
Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair.

OK I hit ENTER before I was finished explaining my problem

I do not know if I can find the original setup CD-ROM. Is there any way around this? I hit f8 on the BIOS screen and tried to boot windows using the last known good configuration and that did not work... same results as above. I tried to boot windows using safe mode and that did not work.

Is my only option going to be finding the oringinal setup CD-Rom? Is this problem with my computer a common one? What could have caused this?

One day the computer was working great, the next day it does this.

    thanks for any help

Try to go into safe mode and run a system restore on it to the last known date that you know the system was working properly.

If benwabnick's solution does not work:

This is not uncommon, a faulty registry hive (usually caused by improper shutdown, but can have many causes)

1. Boot from Windows Cd and go to recovery console, typ CHKDSK /R and let that run (could take 2 hours so be patient)
2. try the advanced methods outlined at

They aren't hard to replace. If you can find one on eBay, get it and use the on-line manuals from Dell's web site. They are very clear and easy to follow.

without the windows xp installation cd there is not much you can do, but if you have it... you can do this.

REMEMBER: all this is considering you have a normal computer, with a normal system and your hardware is not damaged.
Your problem is very generic and the information you are providing is very poor...

boot with that installation cd
let windows xp installation start and when it prompts you to choose between installing or repairing by pressing "R" key, choose this second one and wait till the system shows you a black screen with some lines of white text on it.

you will be now able to write on that console DOS like... type this three commands and when the firsts two ask you, choose YES.

1. fixboot
2. fixmbr
3. chkdsk

the last one will check the hd and will tell you if you have problems in that hd... if it shows problems, after this, you should replace HD so...

after that just reboot your system and see if it works...
TIP: BOOT UP WITHOUT ANY THING BUT KEYBOARD AND MOUSE, disconnect printers, scanners, any usb dispositive, just keyboard and mouse...

if not give me more info on this please.
