SOURCE: How to clear a Machine Error 76

Error 76 is fuser error, you need to change the fuser but first just in case try to reset settings to factory defaults.

SOURCE: Brother mfc 8500 clicking noises

If you open the cover and remove the toner/drum unit, you will see (on the left side as you remove) a small hole with two triangle teeth.
on either side of this hole are two small phillips head screws. this is the problem we had with our clicking noise. As the machine tries to turn the toner/drum, the innards of the toner are becoming harder to turn. So the part of the fax machine that fits in the hole end up stripping the teeth in that hole. If you have an old toner cartridge, you can remove the gearing from it (where the small phillips head screws are) and use it to replace the gearing on the newer cartridge. Or go buy a new toner cartridge.

if the message refers to the scanner, open the cover of the feeding unit on top of the printer and clean it with compressed air. Most probably an insect got stuck somewhere

My Brother MFC-465CN is not printing anything. On print test, all that shows is 5 small squares of CYAN and 1 row and 2 small squares of Magenta, no black, or yellow. There are no error messages, and...

This is probably bad, but we can try. Brother has a cleaning function in its menus, and I'm sure you've tried that. It works by blasting ink through all its nozzles to try to clear any blockages.
It also has more advanced cleaning functions that work essentially the same, but are a lot more aggressive. You need to get into what Brother calls Maintenance Mode first:
Press these buttons in rapid succession:

Menu
Black Start
Up-arrow
Up-arrow
Up-arrow
Up-arrow

The machine will protest with all kinds of beeping. Ignore all that and keep going faster. If you stop to wait for the beeps, it won't work. Touch Stop and do it again.

When you have all the lights flashing together and MAINTENANCE on the display, you're in.
touch 7, 6, 3, Start to initiate a Power Purge, which uses three time the ink as a normal cleaning.
Wander off for a few minutes. When it's done, press 0, 9 to print the same test page you are accustomed to. If it's significantly improved, do the 763Start trick again and test again.
Exit the Maintenance Mode with 9, 9. The machine will go through it's complete start-up procedure.

If these purges don't help, you need a new printhead, and if it's not under warranty, it may cost more that a new MFC 465. If it's just barely out of warranty, call Brother's customer support and beg. They sometimes issue a work order to the closest servicing center and effectively extend the warranty by covering all parts & labor.

Help with Brother MFC-8500 all in one printer

When you get the paper, can you smear the print with your fingers, or is printed on there properly.

if you can smear it, it would be your fuser not doing its job properly, if you cant, then its your replacement toner as it most likely incorporates the drum in it, which i think is your problem.

Brother MFC-8500 Fax Error 77

Error 77 is a fuser error. If resetting the power doesn't work, then the fuser is bad and it will need replacement. Repair should cost around $200-250.

Brother MFC 8500 receives faxes and does nothing else

Check to make sure that the PC Fax Function is turned off. I noticed after I connected the 8500 to my PC and installed the software, I too could no longer receive faxes and it was corrected after I turned this PC Fax function off.

The function is located by:

  1. Press the MENU button.
  2. Select Option 2.
  3. Select Option 1.
  4. Select Option 8 (PC Fax) and turn that function OFF.
Hope this helps!
