Question about Dell Inspiron 1501 Notebook

Icons and Start tool bar disappearing every few seconds

When I start my computer my desk top picture comes up and all my desktop icons and the windows start tool bar comes up. After a few seconds the icons and start toolbar blink off for a few seconds and then come back on. This happens for about 5-10 minutes and then the icons and the start tool bar don't come back on. During this the desk top picture stays on. If I click on the internet I can go on but the start tool bar will continue to blink on and off every few seconds until it doesn't come back on. If I click on any of the functions under the start button it will only stay on for the few seconds that the start tool bar is up, once it blinks off the function I have selected goes off also. Once the start button and icons go away the only way to do anything (if not already on the internet) is to press ctrl alt delete and log off and then log back on. However when logging back on it starts all over again.

Sounds like the explorer.exe process might be restarting. Open Task manager and keep refreshing the processes to see if explorer.exe disappears/re-appears.

I could not get my sylvania netbook to connect to my wifi so i download the update from their website to a SD card then opened on the netbook and it deleted everything on the netbook. how can i restore it...

I do not know why your icons disappeared by running the Download, but your programs are still in the on board ROM memory and what you are missing are your desk top icons. I have tried to duplicate your download problem but so far have not been able. I know that using a SD card will not download a usuable file so I used a thumb drive.

Any way please read the following solution that I wrote to another poster.

If you have deleted the icons for those programs on your desk top, then they may be in your Recycle trash bin. double click on Recycle Bin look for the icon for recorder, right click on recorder and select restore. You really cannot delete the programs from your machine as they are retained in a ROM chip , hard coded into the chip and are loaded each time you cut your machine on. The only thing you can do is delete the icons on the desktop, which are sent to the recycle bin.
To retore the machine to factory settings, there is a small hole just about an inch down from the data plate on the back. Using a pencil point or a straightened paper clip, insert the bject into the hole and hold for about 5 seconds. Your deleted icons are not replaced.
A second method to restore your icon is to click on my computer right click on the recorder, select copy, dismiss my computer, find a blank spot on your desktop and right click on that spot, select paste, and a dos type icon appears as your recorder button. When you cut the machine of and back on the Dos type icon is replaced with a CE type icon
To restore all icons:
You can: If you can click on start, click on run, type desk top into the open space and ok it. your icons should be shown. you will have to copy and paste each one back to your desk top, or select edit and then select select all, then click on file, select send to, and select desk top as short cut. I HAVE A WINDOW XP HOME EDITION AND WHEN I START MY COMPUTER THE ONLY THING THAT COMES UP IS THE BACKGROUND. THERE ARE NO ICONS OR A BAR AT BOTTOM OF SCREEN.

the icons and the bar(task bar) at the bottom of the screen are enabled by the explorer.exe file

it starts automatically but in your case it is not starting

to start it when your computer starts and comes at the desktop, press alt+ctrl+delete button at the same time to bring up the task manager

when you do this a task manager shows up in a window

in task manager window click on file, it will be located on the top left portion on task manager

now click on "new task(run)"

this opens another window, in that window type
"explorer"
without the quotes "" and press enter
this will bring you icons and task bar at the bottom of the screen

Start menu and desk top

Can you start it in Safe Mode? Press F8 while the computer is booting. click on Safe Mode with Networking when the menu comes up.
When you get into Safe Mode, run you anti-virus. And clean your Cookies, Temp files and Internet Temporary Files. And while in Safe Mode, run a defrag of the C: drive. Restart the computer and it should start up correctly.
If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe
