Re: it dont work
First off you need to get into your systems BIOS like sawhand suggested and see what the primary boot device is. Start your laptop and hit the F10 button after a couple of seconds. Once you find the boot priority make sure it start off with either the optical (CD) drive or the hard drive. If the CD is first make sure the hard drive follows after.
Let us know what you find and we?ll pickup from there.
It sounds like the hard drive is faulty. Maybe someone dropped the laptop? I would suggest running whatever BIOS utilities it has, and/or booting up a recovery CD, like Hiren's boot cd.
If I were you, I'd look into having a new hard drive put in it, reinstalling Windows.
If it says disk o failure then your primary drive is down. Get into your bios find out what key enables you to get into setup and then make sure your autodetect for drives is enabled. Sometimes, I have no idea why the settings will change.

When booting up computer constantly tap F12. until you get a boot selection screen.
At that point use the arrow key to make sure start windows normally is selected, and hit enter.
That will knock it out of safe mode. if by hitting F12 you do not get to the boot selection screen, then shut off the laptop, unplug the charger, wait 10 seconds, and then turn the computer on, and the menu should appear.
Power laptop, when asus logo is seen, look down bottom right, press F12 or the number assigned for your model, use the arrows up down keys on the laptop keyboard, highlight hard drive and press enter, this will set the boot order for your hardware to start.
If it does boot to windows and only does not shows the icons..than you have to click right on the desktop and choose to show icons ..and will be ok ..If the screen you wrote about is just a start screen and it never started windows..than I think it is a windows fault and need to be reinstalled .Do that by entering the recovery partition and go with the total installation of the operation system .. to do that choose the key indicated on screen and select the action .. usually on start screen it is written to press F2 for the set-up and f12 for the boot menu and probably F11 for teh recovery ..if it is so ..just press f11 on start ..go to recovery ..choose complete recovery ..and will get it to the factory stage . If the recovery do not work and you do have a disk for it ..insert the disk and boot from it ..try to boot to recovery with the disk on ..and see if ti works..if it dopes its ok ..if not ..restart . and press F12 to go to boot menu .and choose to boot from CD /DVD drive ..and hit enter .. this will force it to boot from disk and load the recovery . same procedure with a boot-able disk with operation system, ..in case you do not have any recovery ..or just have recovery for drivers..and you will be forced to use a standard boot-able disk to load the operation system again have a nice day ..and please rate my answer ..1
When your computer is first booting, try tapping F12 to get to the boot menu. Once there, boot from the Vista installation disk- you may need to fully reinstall windows from that point. Try doing a repair first- if that does not work, do a full reinstall.
sounds like your boot record on hard drive is bad or hard drive turn on computer and hit like f10 or f12 it will tell you right after asus screen what key to hit for restore, if this doesn,t work hard drive is bad. hope this was helpful
To enable missing icons and more, right click on your desktop and choose Properties. Click on the Desktop tab and hit the Customize Desktop button. Next, under the General tab, check off any of the icons you want to appear on your desktop. Once you do that, they will all be returned to your desktop in full view. You can choose from the icons of My Documents, My Computer, My Network Places and Internet Explorer. Now, on the other hand, you may want to take some of those icons off your desktop. If that's the case, just uncheck them and they will be out of your way
If you get this error in a black screen before windows xp can boot up....
CLIENT MAC ADDR: xxxxxxx GUID: xxxxxxxxxx PXE-E53: no boot filename recived PXE-MOF: exiting intel PXE Rom
Your network card's settings in bios have somehow been changed. PXE means Pre-Execution Enviroment. In other words, it allows your network card to connect to a network server to pull operating system images off the network and other files without having an operating system installed.
The Fix, Go into BIOS press F2 or F12 whatever your PC's screen at bootup says. In Bios, reset your bios settings to the default bios settings, or original settings. If nothing else fixed it. Windows Recovery cd will not fix it, because you cannot boot windows if this error is still occuring, Your network card will keep prompting DHCP to search for a network. Its a bios function not a windows function. Reset your bios settings to the default.
