Make a back up of your music on an external Hard Drive or Flash Drive

Copy iTunes folder to your external hard drive
To copy all the items in your iTunes library (including the iTunes Library file that holds all your playlists, playcounts, ratings, and other data) to your external hard drive, follow these steps:

Quit iTunes.
Locate your external hard drive.
Mac: On the desktop or Finder sidebar.
Windows: In My Computer
Locate your iTunes folder:
By default, the iTunes folder is located in:
Mac OS X: /Users/username/Music
Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\
Windows Vista or Windows 7: \Users\username\My Music\
If the iTunes folder is not in the default location listed above then you can find where the iTunes folder is located by following these instructions:

Open your iTunes Preferences:
Mac: Choose iTunes > Preferences.
Windows: Choose Edit > Preferences.
Click Advanced.
The location of your iTunes folder will be listed in iTunes Media folder location box, as pictured below.

Drag the iTunes folder to your external hard drive. This can take a while if you have a lot of items.

When the transfer is complete, your iTunes Library will have been successfully copied to your external hard drive.

Transferring files via external hard drive to new computer

You just need to connect the external hard drive to the new computer. Once it has connected and Windows recognizes the drive it should pop-up with the window asking what you would like to do (select the option to View Files). Also at this time open the folder on the new computer that you want to store the back-up files in. Make the external hard drive folder and the new computer folder sit side-by-side. Then while holding down the CTRL button on the keyboard click each file you want to move. When you are done selecting them - right click on any of the file selected and on the pop-up menu select "copy". Now go to the folder on the external drive and right click the mouse again and from the pop-up menu select "paste". This will just copy the file, that way you can keep the files on 2 different hard drives in case something happen to 1 of them.

You could run the chkdsk utility

there are many ways or running the chkdsk utility

Click start run type cmd then type chkdsk/r/f which will scan for and attempt to recovery any bad sectors and automatically fix any corrupt files on your hard drive there are many ways of running the chkdsk utility or

Click start right click on my computer you should see your drive usually C: select properties click tools check now tick both boxes automatically fix files and scan for and attempt recovery on any bad sectors

then select check now, start should schedule this task when restart

it will only schedule on restart if its the Primary hard drive with an operating system on it

For USB drives click start control panel administrative tools computer management disk management right click on your drive select properties click tools you should see click check now click start two boxes

this process can be done on your primary hard drive C:

automatically fix files and scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors place then a tick in both boxes then select check now start

you might tick one box then return after its finished the first repair then return and tick the second box you should not do anything while the chkdsk utility is in progress any input may damage this drive

I found that you get best results by ticking one box then returning after it has finished then tick the other box
you should have no input while the chkdsk utility is in progress any input may damage your computer and your hard / usb drive

then right click on your drive select properties to see how much space you have

then i would either transfer or cut and paste these documents onto either a pen / data traveller drive or an external usb hard drive

Personally i would go for the pen / data traveller i have heard of to many problems with external usb hard drives

Plug the external hard drive into your laptop or desktop computer.

Most external hard drives do this through a cable connecting the hard drive to the USB outlet on a computer.

Plug your external hard drive into a wall outlet if it receives power from an AC adapter rather than your computer.

or plug your usb pen / data drive into a usb port on your computer

Click start click on computer, you will see all of your drives. C: primary drive D: cd/dvd drive and E: or F: you usb drives

It will be located under the USB connecting drive, which is labeled with a letter ranging from "E:" to "K:".

Open the folder on your external hard drive where you would like to save the documents.

usually in my documents or if you want to save them to a specific spot so as not get them mixed up.

Create a folder if one is not present right click in my documents select new folder and name it lets say my personal docs 1

Move this window to the bottom right corner of your screen to be used in future steps.

Open the folder on your home computer where the files are being stored that you wish to transfer to the external hard drive.

These may be on the desktop, in "My Documents" or elsewhere in your computer.

If you are unsure where they are located, you can always search for them by file name by going to "Start" then "Search."

Right-click on the document, and select "Cut."

Click on the window showing your hard drive files to bring it into use on the screen.

Right-click on the white space in the window where you would like to transfer the files, and select "Paste."

Your files have now been deleted from their original location and transferred to your external hard drive in the folder you selected

hope this helps

Hello that means that your files properties are hidden in your PC. If your operating system is windows 7 you can change it by Clicking START, Control Panel and chose View by Category. Click appearance and personalization and click "show hidden files or folders", located under the "folder option" section. Choose the radio button that corresponds the "SHOW hidden Files, Folders and Drives" option. Uncheck the boxes that correspond to "Hidden protected operating system files". Then save the changes by clicking apply and OK.
If your operating system is Windows XP you change it by clicking My computer then double click the hard drive you want to open then click the view then chose show hidden files and folders.
Keep on touch best regards..

I have simply forgotten how to put stuff from my computer on to my external hard drive. I know it was pretty easy, but nothing cpomes up on my screen to go by. Thanks, Rochelle

The process is dependent upon whether you have an Apple Macintosh or Windows PC-branded computer. I will provide instructions for both.
Windows
Plug the hard drive into your computer. Then follow these steps.
1. Click the Windows logo button in the lower left corner of your screen to open the start menu. 2. If using Windows XP, click 'My Computer' on the right side of the menu that pops up. If using Windows Vista or Windows 7, click 'Computer'. 3. The window that opens will display all of the hard drives and other similar devices connected to your computer. Look for your external hard drive. Typically, the letter of the alphabet assigned to the drive will not be 'C:/' or 'D:/', but some other letter further down the line. 4. Double-click your external hard drive's name or icon. Another window will open. This is the contents of your external drive. 5. To copy files to the external hard drive, first locate the file you wish to copy wherever it might be on your computer. Then, click on the file you want to copy and while holding down the left mouse button, drag it into the window for your external hard drive. 6. The file is now copied. The same action can be taken if you also wish to copy whole folders.
Macintosh
Connect the hard drive to your computer, typically via a USB port.
1. The hard drive should show up as an orange icon on your desktop. Double-click this icon to access the contents of your hard drive. 2. To locate files, click on the smiling, rectangular face-shaped icon in the lower left corner. This is the Finder, and it allows you to find your files. 3. Once you've navigated to the file(s) you desire, (these are generally located in the folder along the left side of the window labeled with your name) click on the file names and drag them to the external hard drive icon, which is also located in the left sidebar of the finder window.
This will copy the files to the hard drive.
Hope this helps. If you would like more assistance, feel free to reply to this solution.
Thank you for using FixYa!

Unit downloaded fine ad the did the back up of the drive fine.started the updates and the firmware stopped and then the drive locked up how to access the drive again after reboot nothing shows G: F:

  1. To restore the Western Digital icon to the drive letter for the external drive in "My Computer".
  2. Please go to the Western Digital Download Library and download the WD Logo Icon which has a file name of External Icon.zip when you download it.
  3. Save the file to your desktop and use a file compression software like Winzip to extract the files inside the .zip file to your desktop. When it's unzipped, it will create a folder named "ExternalIcon" on your desktop.
  4. Double-click on the ExternalIcon folder. It will open a Windows Explorer showing a folder named, Autorun, and a file named, Autorun.inf.Double-click on My Computer and it will open.
  5. Double-click on the driver letter that represents the Western Digital drive you want the icon on and it will open.
  6. Highlight the Autorun folder and the Autorun.inf file. Right-click on them, and left-click on Cut when the Menu appears.
  7. Right-click in the open space of the drive that you opened in the new Explorer window, and then left-click on Paste.
  8. Close both Explorer windows, safely remove the external hard drive by using the Safely Remove icon in the system tray, shut down the computer, and unplug the external drive from the computer.
  9. After you reboot into Windows, reconnect the external drive to the computer again, and the Western Digital Icon should now be displayed with the drive letter in My Computer.

If these steps do not correct the problem, you will need to re-format your External Hard Drive ***WARNING*** FORMATTING A HARD DRIVE WILL ERASE, YOU WILL LOSE, ALL DATA

Xbox 360 Not Playing Music Through External Hard Drive

In windows media player 11, click on the small down arrow below library and select media sharing. Check the box for share my media then turn on you console. I dialog box will pop up asking you to approve file sharing. You can then customize your options for that device. If the dialog box dose not pop up you have a firewall problem. For the Iomega Media Drive, you have to use the software that came with it. Open the program click on configure, select the folders icon, and look next to your media folders and make sure DLNA is on otherwise your console cannot access those folders.
