I am using Napster to Go version 18.104.22.168-US in conjunction with my sansa m230 mp3 player. I went to sync my mp3 player and it wouldn't load my song list on napster. I went into windows explorer and manually removed the songs from the mp3 player. Now when I go to sync music I get a transfer error saying A device attached to the system is not functioning.
I have formatted the mp3 player in FAT format, have tried running in MSC and MTP mode, and have downloaded the latest firmware.

These are the most common methods for recovering Sandisk's Sansa Mp3 Players. I have been almost universally successful in recovering Sansa players using one or a combination of these methods. These methods do not work if you are having synchronization or music format issues - they are for recovering a player that will not power up, freezes, flashes, is not recognized by the computer, and a host of other issues.
Reset the Sansa Player first. On most models, restart is done by holding the power button in for 15 seconds or longer. Check your specific manual to be sure. The manuals are available from the Sansa website if they have been misplaced. Download the Sansa Recovery Tool from the Sansa website. Format - Erases Everything: Connect your Sansa player to the computer and open Windows Media Player. Click on the Sync tab. Pull down the drop down menu underneath the Sync tab by moving your cursor over the Sync tab and left clicking on the little black arrow underneath the Sync tab. Highlight "Sansa 1GB" (wording may vary slightly), and then select "Format." - this should erase everything. Firmware Upgrade- Erases Everything: Get the latest firmware upgrade from Sansa - it updates the firmware and erases every song in the player all at once. Note: this method doesn't work if already have the latest firmware. Go to this website and click "Firmware Updater" to find out: http://www.sandisk.com/DriverDownload/driverList.asp If these fail, then: Try this: disconnect the player from the computer, turn it off, hold in the volume + button, and reconnect the player to the computer while holding the volume + button in. Keep holding the volume + button for an additional 5-50 seconds. Windows should eventually go into recovery mode and revive the player- it will pop up a window that says Found New Hardware Wizard. If you get the problem where MTP Device keeps popping up continuously, uninstall the “MTP Device” by going to Start à Control Panel àSystem à Hardware à Device Manager (you computer may vary slightly, depending on Windows Version). You may have to restart your computer after each of these methods to get them to work properly. Disconnect your Sansa player BEFORE shutting down your computer. -Tha Mp3 Doctor

Your SanDisk Sansa Player does not allow you to delete files from within the player. Deleting Music Files On Your Sansa MP3 Player
When your player is connected to your computer with the USB connector, you can use your computer file browser software to view all files on your player. Your player will appear as Sansa m230 or m240. Follow these steps:
1. Use the USB connector cable provided with your player to connect the USB port on the top of your player to an open USB port on your computer. The player will appear as a Windows Portable Device on your computer. (Can’t find the USB port on your player? See The Basic Controls section on Page 3.)
2. Delete your music files to the player with software tools like Rhapsody, Windows Media Player or Napster Client.

Try reflashing the firmware for your device you can find the latest firmware and flashing utilities from the SanDisk website. Make sure that you back your music up first because when you do this you are setting it back to factory settings.

Do you use Napster by any chance? Some music services actually remove songs after the subscription expires, or if you haven't synced your Sansa to that service within 30 days. Convert all songs to mp3 format, and you will not have that format.
Also, your DB could have become corrupt. A firmware upgrade usually resolves it.
When you first synced your Sansa Clip to the initial computer, you probably synced it (knowingly or not) with a music subscription service such as Napster or Yahoo. If the subscription has since expired, you will get this message. Alternatively, if you tried connecting the Sansa player to another computer which does not have the aforementioned music service, the Sansa player wants to verify that your subscription to the service is still good. The best solution is to hook the player up to the original computer, and resync it with Napster or whatever music service you were using by opening that music service's program. Most of the time, when you connect the Sansa player to Windows XP, Windows will prompt you: Windows will ask what you want to do with the device. Instead of "Take No Action," just sync the player with Napster (or whatever music service you have a subscription to) - Windows will give you this option. If you music service subscription has expired, a more deatiled process may be required which falls outside of the scope of this solution. first you must format the player using msc mode then after that retransfer the songs to the player. If you are receiving this message it means that the songs on the player have expired. This is normal if you download the songs off rhapsody, napster or any online music stores and if you have ripped songs iwht copy protect music on it if you ripped them using windows media player 10.
