Hi and welcome to FixYa,

I am assuming that you are referring to the pins of the slots. If you would install an insulator such as a plastic card, it would separate the pins preventing the short. If you need that slot, installing the a PCI card would also separate the pins. If however the pi(s) have been pressed down and crumpled at the bottom of the slot, the only option is to use a tweezer and pull the erring pin out which of course would render that slot useless.

Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

FIC FR33E motherboard?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/FIC-FR33E-L-MOTHERBOARD-CPU-LOT-10-/170633274365

Reference: Photo

To the far left side of the motherboard, is actually the Bottom of the motherboard, when installed in your computer case.

The two White long expansion slots you see, are PCI expansion slots.
If one is available, (Open), you can use a PCI USB adapter card.
This is but one example,

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4143850&CatId=511

Seem cheap? Nope. Good quality also. (You can also check the reviews)

Need guidance in installing?
1) Follow Anti-Static Precautions

Anti-Static Precautions:
Your body carries Static electricity. Static WILL fry out (Short Circuit) the delicate hardware components inside the computer.

Computer on a table, computer unplugged from power, computer case open.

[Note* Always unplug the power to a computer AT the surge protector. NOT at the back of the computer. (Power Supply)
You can cause a power surge ]

2) TOUCH an unpainted surface, of the metal frame of the open computer case.
This action will relieve your body of Static.

Should you leave your computer in the middle of working on it, be SURE to Touch the metal frame again, upon your return.

3) Finding an open PCI slot look at the back of the computer. In the metal frame you will see slots going horizontally.
These are Expansion Slots.

You may have an add-on adapter card already installed, in one of the PCI slots.
The expansion slot cover for it is removed.

You should see expansion slot covers however, in the remaining expansion slots on the back of the computer metal framework.
Remove the one that corresponds with the PCI slot you wish to use.

Be aware that the PCI slot will not be directly in line, with the expansion slot.
When installing an add-on adapter card, you will see when the card is inserted in the PCI slot, the metal bracket on the add-on card, lines up with an adjacent expansion slot.

This will make more sense to you once you go to install the card.

[PCI USB adapter card is an add-on adapter card ]

Line the card up in the PCI slot. Note that there is a Locating Lug in the PCI slot, and a matching Locating Notch, on the PCI USB adapter card.

Also, at the same time line up the metal bracket of the PCI USB adapter card, with the metal framework of the computer case at the back.

Gently push the PCI USB adapter card down into the PCI slot.
Fasten the card's metal bracket to the computer's metal framework.

Post the computer manufacturer name, and model number, if you need guidance in opening the computer case. Post in a Comment.

How to add usb ports to Dell 530

Suggest use a USB adapter card.

More specifically a PCI USB adapter card.

Dell Support > Inspiron 530 Series Desktop PC > Owner's Manual,

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/inspd530/en/OM/HTML/index.htm

In the list click on - Removing and Installing parts

1) Unplug the computer from power.
[Unplug FROM the surge protector, not the back of the computer. (Power Supply)
Unplugging from the back could lead to a power surge ]

2) Computer on a table open the computer case,
Click on - Removing the Computer Cover - in the list.

3) FOLLOW Anti-Static Precautions

Here you see an illustration of your motherboard. Oriented as it is in your computer case. (Just no hardware components, nor cables are attached)

At the bottom of the motherboard are 2 White long expansion slots.
In the illustration they are labeled by the numbers 21 and 22.
If one of these slots is open, and not being used, you can install a PCI USB adapter card.

This is one example of a PCI USB adapter card,

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5606148&Sku=S262-2744

At the back of the computer, located towards the bottom, are the Expansion Slots.
Four horizontal slots.

If there isn't some sort of add-on adapter card already installed, all of the expansion slots will be covered with an Expansion Slot Cover.

If there is an add-on adapter card installed of course, one of the expansion slot covers will be removed.

Line up the PCI USB adapter card with the open PCI slot, you have chosen.
Now look at the expansion slots at the rear of the computer.
Notice what expansion slot that the PCI USB card's bracket, lines up with.

Go to the back of the computer, and view the small metal bracket on the bottom right. Loosen the Thumbscrew, and swing the bracket out. (Thumbscrew is supposed to just loosen, not come out)

Remove the expansion slot cover for your PCI slot choice.
Install the PCI USB adapter card.
Note that there is a Locating Lug in the PCI slot, and a matching Locating Notch, on the PCI USB adapter card.

Line them up, then push the PCI USB card straight down into the PCI slot.
Also watch the metal bracket on the back of the PCI USB card.
The 'tang' at the Bottom, slides down in-between the framework.

The top of the bracket has a half-moon notch, that lines up with a small 'dowel' on the computer case framework.
Make sure it is aligned, and the bracket is aligned.

What I am referring to will become readily apparent, as you go to install the PCI USB card.
If there are any other add-on adapter cards, they may try to fall out, when you go to install the new add-on card.

You just have to line them up, so their bracket notches are all on the 'dowels', and hold them in place. Then swing the 'door' closed. Tighten the thumbscrew.

If you have an Add-on card in the way, and by moving it to the other PCI slot, will allow you to install the PCI USB card, go ahead, and move it.
Doesn't matter. BIOS will find it, and assign an Interrupt Request.

There are two other expansion slots above the 2 white PCI slots.
The expansion slot right above the top PCI slot, is a PCI-Express x1 slot.
If this slot is open, OR the only one available, you can use a PCI-Express USB adapter card.

Example,

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5606149&CatId=511

The last expansion slot you have is above the PCI-Express x1 slot.
This is a PCI-Express x16 slot, and is ONLY used for a graphics card.

Why my dell dimension 8300 audio jacks dont work?

If the on board audio jacks don't work, then go to your local computer store the online store that I like and buy a PCI Sound Card that goes into one of the PCI Slots on the desktop.

You can find one for less than $20. The link below will take you to the site. When it opens up just type PCI Sound Card in the white search box and press GO. When the search results return they show the most popular, sort the list down by Price Low to High. Whichever one you select read the details on it to make sure it will work with your operating system. That's the only criteria you need to worry about. PCI slots are universally standard, so if it's a pci it will fit in your pci slot.

I need to replace my acer aspire desktop computers sound card...the serial number is am5640u5401a.....i have windows vista and an e2160 intel premium processor, can you tell me which soundcard to buy?

Your computer has all the regular expansion slots so it should be compatible with any sound card you wish to buy (it has PCI and PCI-e slots). I can suggest a suitable one for you if you can tell me the sort of audio-related tasks you use your computer for.
I am assuming you know how to install a sound card. If you don't, it really is not very difficult, and the card should come with instructions on how to do it.

I would firstly reboot and if that doesn't clear the error run www.iobit.com asc.setup utility to remove crosslinked files and sort out a crosslinked registry. Failing that remove the driver from the Control Panel and let the OS set up a fresh driver. Make sure the driver is the correct one!

There are several cards out ther that will fit into a standard PCI slot. Here are a couple of links that lists them. You can usually check any PC hardware reseller online and sort them by type, showing only cards that are connected through a PCI slot.

HELP FINDING A CARD TO FIT MY PCI SLOT

It is easy to get the PCI & PCIE stuff mixed up. PCI slots are all white doesn't matter who makes the board. PCIE however is all together different from a PCI slot. The PCIE slot sits fauther away from the back of the computer & so does a AGP. PCIE is a very long card. A PCI is not. The short slot you saw is also a PCIE slots. Not for video but more likely for network card. Most people never use them. Most likely the long slot above the short slot is a PCIE. So you want a card that is like what I'm going to list in this link.
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=1559&Nav=|c:1558|&Sort=0&Recs=10
Please list the model number of your Dell & I can tell you exactly what video card you need.
please vote... I'll check back in an hour or two.
