When I push the start button on my maytag neptune dryer it sounds
Like it wants to start but doesn't and then it gets this smell like something is burning? When it does start which is getting less and less it takes a while before it kicks in and gets the barrel moving.?. Please help!!

burning smell is because the drum is not rolling and the motor is trying to turn, hopefully it did not damage the motor: more then likely it the drum rollers/glides, might want to check the idler arm here is a website that will help. depending on fast you need your dryer a good and cheap place to buy parts is on eBay, of course they can be purchased locally, Good Luck Tim:
sounds like you cooked the motor, did it smell like shellac,if it did it's the motor, see if you can spin the drum by hand,if it feels bound up the belt or something could of got jammed in the blower wheel killing the motor,or it could have overheated from not cleaning out the dryer.the only way to tell is by getting in there and checking it out,let me know what you find, unplug the dryer, open the door, remove the two screws holding the door in place and then remove the door.next remove the other two screws opposite the door screws and pull the front panel off.remove the bulkhead and L brackets on the top and pull the drum and belt.you'll need the model number and the first two numbers from the serial number to order your parts
if its electric burning smell, its either a overheating motor, capacitor or both or burnt connections, sounds like a motor problem,it will be very hot to touch if its failing, check capacitor though as it could be causing motor to overheat, rating of cap is on side
It sounds like the drum bearings are seizing up preventing the drum from rolling easily, and when the motor runs, it can't pull the drum belt around the drum that won't turn, so starts squealing and burning the belt.
You need to lubricate/replace the drum bearings, and replace the belt.
Yes, I would replace the starter switch...Also, there is a relay next to the starter switch(behind panel) that may be on the blink.. Try switch first as they are cheap.. The Repay retails for around $50.00. Goodluck!
