Go into your bios settings and select Quick boot or Fast boot. Also, what programs are slated to start when Windows loads? Go into Start>Programs>Start up and see what is there, you can delete programs that you do not want to start up. Check the toolbar, is it full of icons? Go through each and if there are preferences or options then make changes so that they do not start when Windows starts up. And just to stay classical, run a Defrag and Disk Cleanup from Start>Programs>Accessories>System tools.

Try increasing your RAM to 2GB ... 1GB is barely enough to run the OS, let alone an app or two.

Slow boot up and slow performance

you have 512mb of ram, firstly i recommend upgrading to atleast 1GB of ram especially if using Vista.

You may have a virus, assuming you have got an antivirus programme, run it, if not click the link below for AVG 8 Free

Also clean your system of old temp and registry files using Ccleaner, again free, click link below

17" MBP Slow

Depending on the amount of RAM that you have, you may need to add RAM. If you have less than 2GB, you should upgrade the RAM. The other issue could be memory in general since you're running both systems and obviously have a smaller drive than would be available if you were only running one. I would remove the partitions and use one boot drive to see if that makes any difference. Just back your files up first.

Buying a laptop

I wasn't aware they still put mobile Pentium 4 processors in laptops. If you can, you should get an Intel Core Duo or Core 2 Duo.

Other than that, the specs look pretty good. You might want to upgrade to 2GB of RAM though if your computer is going to be running Windows Vista.
