Question about Sharp AQUOS Blu-ray Disc Player

4 Answers

I've downloaded a firmware update for my Aquos BD- HP20 Blu-ray player.  Unzipped the zip file and I put the .RVP file onto a Sony memory stick but when I try to get the player to recognize I file on the memory stick I says there's more than one file on the stick.  Any idea of what I can do?  Thanks for any ideas

Yes -- I have the same problem. I've tried several different memory/USB devices, and even tried reformatting them to different file systems (FAT, FAT32, NTFS), and no matter what I do, with several devices, I get squat.

exact same problem I have.... called Sharp 3 times now & they are useless...have been to 3 home video/entertainment stores to ask for assistance and no one knows anything....now what?
I will be returning  the player back, I guess. The process shouldn't be this involved

I have the same problem: downloaded the 'fix' firmware from the Sharp site to a USB stick; unzipped it to the stick; plugged it into the service USB port on the DVD player and carried out the install instructions. The DVD reports that it can't detect the software. I am trolling the net for help now as I can't watch the new James Bond Blue Ray DVD: very frustrating!

Same problem, also can't watch Quantum Of Solace.

I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM, UNFORTUNATELY THE MESSAGE THAT STATES THIS BLU RAY MAY NOT WORK ON YOUR PLAYER HAS BEEN PACKAGED INSIDE THE WRAPPER OF THE NEW JAMES BOND FLICK AND AS WE ALL NO IF THEY ARE OPENED THEY CANT BE RETURNED AND I AM NOT COMPUTER SAVY ENOUGH TO UPDATE MY SHARP AQUOS BLU RAY. ANYONE WANT MY QUANTUM OF SOLACE?

  • Anonymous Apr 23, 2009

Same problem as all others have described and with the new Bond Blu-Ray.

  • Anonymous May 02, 2009

Not got Quantum of Solace on Blu-ray, but I know my BD- HP20 won't play Casino Royale on DVD.

Do I need a firmware upgrade?

  • Paul_1960 May 08, 2009

I had the same problem - DVD player reported more than one software file.  I had used a Mac to download the update and it was showing up as a "unix executable".  I used "unarchiver" (free download) and the result was then a simple document, and the update worked properly.

Today i solved following errors on sharp blu-ray hp20 when updating software to play quantum of solace:

can't detect software: due to .rvp file being inside a folder--not in root directory on usb stick

more than one software file detected by player: .rvp hasn't been properly unzipped. the 2 gb disc and, as far as i could tell, my system (imac os 10.5.6) showed successfully extracted SINGLE file ready for transfer to dvd player, but dvd player said that there was more than one file. erased the 2 gb disc with disc first aid utility as part of exercise. also verified FAT format on 2 gb disc. only after i used a downloaded free mac utility *specifically for extracting ZIP files* to transfer the .rpv file to the 2 gb disc did the dvd player recognize the file and i successfully updated the player's software! (sorry for the run on, i think the logic is accurate)

Eureka!!!

Had the same nippy problem as everyone above and spent hours trying to rectify this.

Whatever we do when we get the machine i.e. changes made in the menu, seems to affect certain functionality, including the update function.

SIMPLY GO INTO MENU, THEN SETTINGS, DOWN TO RESET, RESET THE MACHINE TO FACTORY SETTING, THEN TRY UPDATING IT. IT SHOULD WORK LIKE A CHARM!!!

Think I have a fix. Using Mac OS 10.5.6, I did a few things:
1. using disk utility, reformatted the USB stick fat 32
2. extracted (unzipped) the file cleanly with Stuffit rather than automatically via Safari 3. reset the Sharp HP20 to factory settings 4. install (it worked!)
- this is after many, many attempts troubleshooting the problem.

I did the same if you download the CD version and burn it to CD using Nero (If you do not have Nero either get the CD from Sharp or download the trial version of Nero 9 it will work)

Follow the instructions and it overwites the USB install

Mine now works

My BD HP20 will not play most new Blu Ray disc. I understand it needs to be updated. Is there some thing I can buy to do the update ?

You need a USB flash drive (FAT format); in my experience even less than 1G drives are sufficient. Download the firmware update to your computer from the site:
http://www.sharpusa.com/CustomerSupport/ProductDownloads.aspx
(You'll need to fill in the drop down menus) The file is a .zip and must be extracted to the root directory of the USB drive. Then safely eject the drive from the computer (to ensure that the write step is finished). Plug the drive into the player (port marked Service) and go through the setup menus. Setup > Settings > Software Update (you need a password so it will ask you for one if not already set). Click Enter and the file on the drive will be compared to the current installed firmware. Then press Yes to install and wait for it to finish. If errors occur try removing and reinserting the drive. When done, remove the flash drive.

I hope this helps.

(some TV repair shops may have the flash drives available but you'd probably have to pay for a service call to get a technician and the drive.)

I have a Sharp BD-Hp20 and i already got the firmware update and still cannot watch Avatar Bluray please help.

Make sure that you do have Version HU9071500 installed--->press setup button------>settings-------> version. If it is installed then after you insert Avatar it takes between 8 and 10 minutes before you can select play movie.

I downloaded the firmware update for my sharp bp-hp20 blue ray player but my player won't recognize the file on my memory stick. Any suggestions?

There are usually two reasons that this happens 1. is that the file needs to be extracted first to the root of the drive ie. not in any folders. 2. is that some of the older sharp products won't reckonize any usb memory larger than 1GB. As is the case with my 52' Sharp AQUOS Special Edition LC-52SE94u TV. Could not read a 2GB Kingston, but reads the 1GB Kingston just fine to update firmware. And Sharp doen't tell you this not even in the online how to firmware update page.

Hope this solver you problem,
Scott

Hello, we had the same problem with District 9. If your in uk you need to go to http://www.sharpelectronics.info/Software.aspx, select the sharp bd player make e.d. BDHP21H and select download to your desktop. If you not in uk go to the sharp web site relevant to your country. Once download is complete you need to extract files (they are zipped). In our case there were three files downloded, one being directions, the 2nd the actual software update and the 3rd something th do with version numbers. Once unzipped copy and paste the file ending in .RVP only to your usb/pen drive. Now insert the usb/pen drive into the bd player and follow the set up instructions. IN the case of our bd player (which is a different make to yours) we selected set up, software update and then just followed the directions from there. But probably best you follow the instructions given by sharp on thedownload. Best of luck.

Firmware download for MAC

hey same problem here, but I just downloaded the CD version anyways... then dropped the .RUF file onto my desktop, selected it, burnt it to a CD-R (RW will also work) and popped it into the BD-P1500, so far it seems to be running along steadily in the update process... hope this solves your problem.
