Question about Meade DS114-EC Telescope

1 Answer

Gears will not hold telescope

The gears on the tripod that hold the telescope are stripped or very loose. The telescope will fall forward or backward depending on how you move it. Is there replacement parts anywhere to fix this problem?

This is a common problem in the DS series. The altitude slewing mechanism has a design flaw that will cause the jack screw to back off of the axis gear, and get the screw caught on the internal body of the mount. It also tends to crush the jack screw against the motor spindle.

Meade does not sell replacement parts. You'll have to send the mount to them to have it repaired.

My camera is falling forward off tripod when I let go of it after a few seconds. I've tightened all the knobs and I need to fix this today..

Without knowing the make and model of the tripod and the type of the camera, I can only be general/

The camera may be too heavy for the tripod head. Heads are rated to hold so much weight. If the camera/lens combo is too heavy for the head. it will tip forward. Many department store grade tripods can handle only light cameras.

The locking mechanism may be damaged/broken.

If you need more info, please repost the question, specifying the make and model of the tripod and the type of the camera. If it takes interchangeable lenses, also include the make and model of the lens.

Images appear upside down when I look through the eyepiece

Yes, that is the way with astronomical telescopes.
Perfectly normal. We don't care if the image is upside-down or backwards [flipped left to right]

I have a Meade RB-70 telescope and have stripped the gears in the vertical adjuster - Meade no longer has the parts available

Only Meade would have the repair parts. Sorry. You will need to either use it as is, or purchase another telescope.

The telescope TUBE could be re-mounted on a photo tripod and used manually if you want to do this.

We need a tripod clamp securing screw for one of the two clamps that hold the scope onto the tripod,\r\nWe are based in England, any idea's?

Bushnell has a repair web site here:

You can also try looking around in a well stocked local hardware store for something that would work. Whenever I loose a screw or bolt I first check the local hardware store for a replacement part that can be used.

Not for that telescope. However you may find what you need at a well stocked local hardware store. The ALTITUDE adjuster bolts are loose or stripped.

Need new tripod for telescope30x 60x 50mm

Regular telescope tripods will cost more than you paid for the telescope. Try to find a regular camera tripod that will work. You can get any bolts or nuts from your local well stocked hardware store. Hopefully it is a 1/4 inch bolt holding the scope.

Gear select lever is very loose. It move forward

There is a pin that goes through the shifter that hold it in place, along with a spring just inside where the end of the shifting lever is, that makes the lever "return" after you pull it back to shift. These springs can break and bind up. Take a look at both.

Backlash on scope tube meade lx90

The washers are there for a reason-- there is an adjustment screw for the worm gear-- and the Dec axis works off a friction clutch when you tighten the knob on the fork arm.

Are you talking about the center bolt on the tripod that holds the telescope on the tripod-- ??? If you overtighten this it will interfere with the rotation of the telescope....and can break the motor.

Here is Jan's LX90 web site with disassembly instructions and pictures--
