The plastic that is attached to the stainless interior is deteriorating....the pump was clogged which caused the machine to not drian. The repair man showed me all the stuff, looks like sand, that was in the drain tube and pump. It's cleaned and working but now makes a ton of noise and I noticed the deterioration of this plastic part....that is the sand like substance. Every time it spins it is tearing up this plastic.
I suspect it's the aluminum spider arm that spins the back of the tub. The moist environment and the ionizing laundry detergent causes a chemical reaction that corrodes this easily and it breaks. It is covered under a lifetime warranty, so call Whirlpool and ask them to send the whole tub unit (the spider arm is attached via machineshop). You will need c-clip pliars to DIY or have a serviceman install it, and be sure to label the clips for when you put them back. This happened to us. The seal is part of the tub unit. Good luck!

It sounds like the agitator gripping teeth are worn out. To check this, take the agitator cap off with a strong knife or flat-head screw driver, pull the cap off and check the plastice teeth and four plastic hooks that grab the teeth. If they are worn out, then you will have to replace the agitator. To replace it, you will see a nut that is between the circlular teeth. Unscrew the nut and pull the agitator up hard.

really sounds like a coupler issue. May look fine but if one of the teeth are busted it will do this. You can get a tutorial for fixing this here. http://www.shop.washermd.com/category.sc?categoryId=4
