Automobile adapter not working

The plug in automobile adapter for the cigarette lighter keeps going on and off. Is there a fuse in it? or where can I get a replacement plug for it.

Sounds like either you have a break in the wire when it moves you lose your connection. If it was a fuse it would be blown and you wouldn't get any power. Wriggle the wire or look for a lump in the cord, indicates a break. You can get another adapter almost anywhere, auto parts, my neighbor hood deli had them hanging up.

Thanks for letting me assist with your problem. Does your vehicle have another lighter or utility plug? If it does, try and plug your One into a different one. If you only have one, try it in a friends vehicle and see if the problem continues. If it stops cycling on and off, then it's the lighter outlet in your vehicle. If it doesn't then it could be the plug on the vehicle adapter. If my help has been satisfactory, I'd appreciate a rating. Thanks for using FixYa.

Car power supply for Garmin nuvi 755t does not work. Not sure if its the Wire, mount Adapter or other.

I assume you have checked the cigarette lighter to be sure it's working.
The most likely problem is the fuse in the power cord/charger. The plug which goes into the cigarette lighter socket has a ring at the end of it. Unscrew the ring, taking care not to lose any small parts, and it comes apart. Replace the fuse and it should be ok.

Hello kdiltzbook,

Most GPS units can be charged three different ways:

1. Connection to a computer via USB port
2. Connection to a automobile via cigarette lighter plug
3. Connection to a wall outlet via an AC adapter

Typically most GPS devices these days include only the USB cord. Some GPS units also include the cigarette lighter plug. For most GPS units the cigarette lighter plug and AC adapter are optional accessories have to be purchased in addition to the GPS.

You don't mention which model of Magellan GPS you have so I am not sure which cords your GPS should have included. It sounds like you have the cigarette lighter cord and the USB cord? I am sure that Magellan has an AC adapter available for your GPS. You will want to contact them directly (their website is http://www.magellangps.com) or visit an electronics store that sells Magellan GPS receivers (such as Best Buy™) to purchase the adapter.

However, most GPS receivers can be charged from the USB programming cord on the computer. However, ensure you are plugging the cord directly into a USB 2.0 on the computer itself NOT a port on a USB hub. (A USB hub may not output enough power to actually power and charge the GPS.)

You will also want to check and replace the fuse on the automobile plug.

I believe that both the USB and automobile cords should be charging the GPS. If neither adapter is charging the unit then the problem may be the GPS unit itself. The GPS may have a bad battery or problem with its charge circuitry. If that’s the case the unit may require factory service as the battery pack is generally not considered to be end user replaceable.

Best Regards,
Ken

If the unit works on battery but not the AC adapter or cigarette lighter adapter, obviously the problem is in the adapter.

1. Have you verified that you have +12VDC at your accessory jack?

2. Have you checked the fuse in the cigarette adapter?

What are you powering it with when not on the battery?

Installation / wiring

Yes, you can do what you said above. The only issue I see is that you should still add an inline fuse between the GPS and the power source you will be connecting it to.** SEE NOTE BELOW **
The cigarette lighter plug has a fuse in it. Most of the fuses you have in the car start at 5 Amps and go up in value, like 10A, 20A, etc.

The problem is these values are way too high should the GPS have a catastrophic failure or the GPS power leads get pinched or shorted to ground. You'll burn up the GPS and its wiring before the auto fuse blows.

You need a low rated fuse (probably 1/4A) inline with the GPS. This will give you adequate protection. You can buy inline fuse cords at Radio Shack.

** NOTE **
Check to make sure that the DC output of the cigarette adapter is indeed +12VDC and not some lower voltage indicating that there is an internal regulator circuit. I took a look at the 660 owners manual and it says the GPS input voltage is +12VDC, so you should be ok. I also hear there is some electronics inside of the cigarette lighter plug. It may have to do with charging the internal GPS battery. You could always take apart the cigarette plug and remove the internal board and use it in your hard wiring to your vehicle.

Once you get it all working, you could duplicate what you built for another vehicle. You can buy the cigarette adapters online.

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance to you.

Good luck!

I can't charge my GPS while I am in the car

Verify that the car cigarette lighter outlet is working. Do you have something that you could plug into the lighter like a light?

With the car running plug the Garmin into the cigarette lighter outlet. Does it come on without pushing the ON button? If the answer is no then there is either a problem with the cable or the cigarette lighter outlet. It should come on by itself if the lighter is working. Also are you using Garmin cables and DC adapter?

No power to unit, but powers on okay in house with AC power adapter

Not sure if you'll see this post, as you asked the question back in Nov, but I
thought I'd tell you what I know anyway.

I and my parents bought the same exact unit within a week of each other.
There's works, and mine does not.

I took their cradle, and hooked it to my GPS, and it came on, no problem.
I took my cradle, and hooked it to theirs, and boom, nothing.

So, with that, I was able to isolate that the problem is definitely in the cradle.

I went to the manufacturer website, registered my Magellan Roadmate 700,
and then I was able to contact customer support. I am writing to you as
I wait for their reply. Here's their website.

Hope this helps!
