It is feature of the wireless router not a feature you could activate on the PC.

Can I hoop up a wireless router to this computer

You can hook up any computer/laptop to a wireless router via LAN cable or by wireless connection.
For a wireless connection each computer/laptop needs a wireless card and the wireless card driver installed and the wireless card needs to be configured with the router's wireless settings.

Not reading wireless connection

The wireless router needs its wireless settings configured and also the wireless card in all the laptops and or computers needs to be configured with the router’s wireless settings so the laptops and desktop computers can communicate with the wireless router.

To set-up and secure the wireless router from unauthorized access, follow these steps: -
1. Connect the wireless router to your computer with a LAN cable.
2. Start your browser and enter the router's configuration URL IP address.
3. Enter the router setup, login and password
4. Change the admin password
5. Go to the wireless settings and change the default SSID and turn off SSID broadcast.
6. Setup encryption key the strongest is WPA2 (if not then WPA).
7. For further security measures - turn on MAC address filtering and enter the MAC address of the wireless cards on the computer/s you want to connect to this wireless router.
8. Record the settings you have made and keep it in a safe place and Save the settings.
9. Configure the wireless cards on the computer/s with the SSID and encryption settings of the router.
10. Remove the LAN cable between the router and the computer then the computers should be able to connect to the router wirelessly.

Need assistance starting up my acer aspire computer m1641

Timegatewood,

That would depend on how you would like to get the internet connection to your ACER.

Option 1

Ethernet line
Benefits: Faster connection, easier setup, more secure
Cons: Wires must be physically routed requiring drilling through walls or passing through vent openings.

What you'll need:
Router
Cat 5 ethernet cable from router to ACER and to your HOST PC
Ethernet network interface cards (NIC) in both PC's
any length of cable exceeding 100-150 feet will likely need a network Hub to boost signal strength

Option 2
Wireless
Benefits: Wiless acces to host PC(no drilling through walls etc.) can connect multiple PC's by simply adding a wirless card to new PC
Cons: prone to interference, less secure, setting up security protocols can be cumbersome

What you'll need:
Wireless Router/Access Point(AP)
Wirless adapter for remote PC (ACER)
Someone who is knowledgable about Wireless security to setup the firewall settings in the router.

OK so now that you have the options you can decide which is best for you.

Ethernet : If your willing to drill holes or pass through vents this will give you a faster connection
Wireless: This makes for a no mess/no fuss connection but at the expense of security and potential interference from cordless phones etc..

If you need help setting up your Network connection after you decide which you'd like please feel free to ask.

Thanks
Dave

I am trying to connect my wireless router, 2 Wire Home Portal 1000SW to my Dell Inspiron 1525. I can plug the Internet directly but need to configure it for wireless Help!

If you want to setup your wireless connection with security go here
http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/wireless/routerindex.htm and then choose the brand and model of your router then on the bottom there is an option there on how to connect the the network using WinXP.

I suggest you secure your wireless so no other people will be able to go online for free on your network

I need help in configuring the computer in wireless internet connection. I am using a D-Link. It shows a connection but that is all it won't go any further.

Routers usually come with a setup CD. Run the setup CD on a computer connected with a network cable to the D-Link router.

Then use the computer with the wireless card without a network cable connected to connect to the wireless network connection.

You should be able to see in the taskbar an icon that you can right click to select a wireless connection.

I have recently bought a Belkin 54G Mod Router so that I could use my laptop with wireless connection in another room while my PC remained wire connected. I have installed it as directed but I keep losing...

a couple of question for you, is your wireless secure or did you enable security features like wep or wpa, how many people authorise people are on your network. if not secure, secure your wireless network, hackers like to kick people off their own system, upgrade the firm ware on your router, for the latest compatibility it will fix issues that arise and finally do a bios upgrade on your laptop.

Other people seem to be able to access our wireless connection. how do we secure it as we cant find passwords in the instructions or on the disc. Please help thanku.

You need to log into your routers programming and set a WEP key... Or rename the SSID to something like your last name and tell it NOT to broadcast. Whenever your done write all the information down in a safe place. Then you'll need to re-run the wireless network setup wizard on PC's and tell it what the new SSID is and if you used a WEP key you'll need to tell it that too.

Whats the exact brand/model # for your router?

How to secure my wireless connection?

Open IE, go to your router using 192.168.1.1 and select Wireless security for the router you are using. Use WEP or WAP with 64 bit security. Use the same key on your desktop to connect to this secure connection.
