After updating Itunes to 8 itunes wont' open

I've just a fresh install of XP on my wifes computer and installed itunes off the installation disk that came with her ipod (version 5). This version of itunes works great but if it's upgraded to the latest version 8 it will not open. The itunes shows up in the process list there is no error message however, the itunes window will never come up. I've tried everything I can on Apples troubleshooting and have uninstalled and reinstalled itunes multple times each time version 5 works great and version 8 hangs with no error message.
