Make sure you have the presser lifter lever in the proper position. When lowering it, push to the rear and it will stop half way down. This engages the upper tension but keeps the foot from lowering down and touching the fabric.
If this doesn't help please post the exact problem, i.e. thread pulling to the bottom etc.
Good luck!

Where is the feed dog switch on the singer athena 2009 sewing machine

I'm not able to find a reference to a feed dog switch for your machine.

Singer Athena 2000 Instructions Manual Page 9

Could possibly be accomplished using a special plate? The instructions do refer to a darning foot, so the machine should be able to deactivate the feed dogs.

Hello, Please can you tell me how to lower the dogs teeth on Elna SU airelectronic 68 so as to do free hand embroidery. Thank you julie Roberts

The owner's manual would have that information. If you don't have it, here's one:

Instruction Manual Elna 68

unfortunately, Elna manuals are usually not free

You could probably also ask your Elna dealer how to do darning on your machine. You will also need a darning or free motion quilting foot for your machine. Your machine either has the ability to raise/lower the feed dogs or the machine came with a darning plate to cover the feed dogs.

How do you set up a brother XL-5700 for free motion quilting

Be sure to have a darning foot or free motion quilting foot (this presser foot is shorter in height so when you lower it, it will not press the fabric to the feed dogs). The foot must allow space under it so the fabric can be manually moved.

The last step is to lower the feed dogs so they are not interfering with your manual manipulation of the fabric.

Lots of web sites about free motion quilting.

Can I do stippling on my 400xl

This is free motion quilting. There are a ton of web sites and videos available. You'll need a darning or free motion quilting foot for your machine. Drop the feed dogs. If you are certain you want to do free motion quilting, a Supreme Slider helps you move the fabric.

I bought an Elna Heirloom 2yrs ago on ebay and have never touched it due to many deaths in my family, well now I don't know how to use it I have a booklet with it but I have no idea how to use it

since you have a instruction booklet, that will show you how to thread the machine & should show how to insert the bobbin, the instruction booklet should also show the different parts of the machine.
I suggest changing the needle the manual should tell you about that
and since the machine has been sitting up for 2 years, it probably needs to be serviced
I also suggest that you read the manual all the way through to help you learn what all you can do with the machine.
you lift up the presser foot to put the fabric under & then place the presser foot down on the fabric where you want to start sewing
make sure to have thread tails on the top thread & bobbin of 3 to 6 inches & pull them behind the needle before you start sewing.

Loops of thread on top of quilt when doing stippling embroidery

Could be caused by any number of things, but I would make sure your threads - upper and bobbin - are threaded correctly. Most importantly, use the free motion (darning) foot and even more important - be sure to put the presser foot lever down, but not all the way - it should rest on the little "shelf" so that it is hovering above your work. If you push it a little towards the rear of the machine while you are lowering it, it will find the shelf. And drop your feed dogs. You need to open the bobbin cover to locate the sliding lever to do this.

Settings for stippling freesia 425

Lower feed dogs. Turn on Needle Down. Presser foot pressure on Darning setting. Don't forget to lower the presser foot lever. That's about it! Since you are going to be the feed dogs, it doesn't really matter if you have a stitch length set or not, but do have width set for "0". The spring loaded darning/embroidery/quilting foot is the best for stippling, but try it with any open toe foot you may have. Do a few samples first using the threads you intend using on your project because the tensions might need tweaking. Try to get the result you like by adjusting only the top thread tension. If you really have to adjust the bobbin too, put a small mark on the bobbin case where the "normal" position of the screw is so you can return to that when you are done quilting.

Machine quilting

To stipple ,remove the ankle and foot, lower the feed dogs and, most importantly, lower the presser foot lever.
You can also buy a LOW SHANK darning foot which will help prevent skipped stitches. It must be screwed onto the machine instead of snapping on.
