Vintage pioneer SX550 "sputters" when first turned on

I have a 30 yr old Pioneer stereo tuner/amp (SX550) in good shape except when it is first turned on, it "sputters" the light on the dial flickers and after a few minutes it stops this madness and actually works. Years ago it did this only briefly when switched on. I am guessing that it is a faulty capacitor and would like to find it and replace it myself. Would appreciate any help regarding this.

Hi...
I own a few Pioneer SXseries recievers..I repair these and others like them in my own business.
What it needs is new power supply capacitors. Parts are cheap. Labor is a couple hours

Bought a Pioneer SX580 receiver, everything lights up but can't get any sound

Do you know for sure that it works okay? i.e. did you hear it playing through speakers before you parted with your cash?

Have you checked for buttons that switch the speakers on/off (Speakers A/B A+B) or a manual mute button?

Pioneer sx-850 goes into protection after several minutes of use. It seems to be after warm up or when room temperature is too high. Summer temps.

Did you check whether the protection assy is working properly? The protection circuit is checking the current of the power transistors as far as I remeber. So there are several possibilities for that fault.
You should grab the service manual or at least schematic (http://elektrotanya.com/pioneer_sx-850_sch.pdf/download.html) and then go step-by-step. I recommend to start up with the protection assy itself. If this works properly go for the power amp. It is also not unlikely that the power supply is the cause of the problem.
Good luck.

Pioneer Sa-9900 vintage home stereo pops loudly after warm up through speakers, any ideas?

Usually indicates old/faulty transistors or capacitors, not uncommon with a unit of this age. A good repairman can restore these to working condition.

I just bought an old vintage pioneer sx 737 receiver and cannot get NO fm reception, and only 2 or 3 on am....HELP!!!!! I have used antennas as well...Charlie

Even with just a short wire, this model should be receiving a number of stations. Is there an IC inside marked LA7001 or something similar? If so, it is probably defective. This is a common failure. I'll look up your specific model later to confirm.

Sound Just Stopped Working

I have the same problem with my 49txi, and I called pioneer and a repair shop as well. Both told me that the 49txi has a known problem with over heating and that its boards unsolder themselves. I would have thought Pioneer would stand behind something this expensive, but that was the old Pioneer in the 80s, and the new Pioneer says we are on our own.

Why not plug the cassette directly into the CD recorder? Are they trying to achieve some eqalization change? If not, then this should work. It's all analog at tape level.

Pioneer SX1280 repair

I have taken my 1280 to Austin Stereo, they are honest , upfront, and guarantee their work. So impressed that I took a 1080 that two previous techs had butchered and they fixed it to like new specs.512-451-0408 is their #. They go out of their way to help those of us that are not well versed in techspeak. Both units sound superb with the big 15 inch Cerwin Vega speakers!!!
