There is a service bulletin out for this unit that states there is a possibility of the tub bolts loosening up preventing the tub from spinning. not sure if you wanna try to tackle it or not but you may check the tub bolts to be sure they arent loose. since there is a service bulletin this repair may be covered by maytag.

This is how it works:
The counterclockwise rotation of the drive shaft and hub assembly causes the clutch spring to relax into an override position. The clutch spring still exerts a driving force to the
input pinion even when it is in the override position. As this driving force of torque starts to turn the input pinion in a counterclockwise direction, it causes the "wings" of the gear lock mechanism to drop into dents on the lower housing. This prevents the input pinion from revolving in the counterclockwise direction. Therefore, the torque being delivered by the clutch spring is exerted against the transmission housing, causing the entire assembly to
rotate.

in your machine it looks like there is a problem with gears which locks reverse spinning.

The tension may be to tight on your belt. back of the tension just a bit. not much just a bit.. also, the gears ratio may be off as well but, i think its the first solution that will free it to spin.

Check wigwag switch to see if it is hanging between wash and spin or if one of the solenoids isn't engaging. Might also have trouble in transmission.

It sounds like the Outer Bearings are going due to a leaky Tub Seal. Bothe can be repaired and have done on this site. This site has no way to reference past post to machine issues.

I have helped owners of theFAV6800A and FAV9800A machines here but I prefer a tru DIY site.

I no longer post on this site no way to post a Sticky for machine issues.

If you want to DIY the repair Google this phrase ""Sticky: Neptune TL Washer FAV6800AWW""" Read the post Part 1; DC or UC unbalance error codes in Spin Cycle what is causing this issue? Part 2 for the fix action.

Post your issue in the repair forum not in the Sticky. Please include your Model Number i.e. FAV6800A or FAV9800A and I will help you.

Maytag Neptune FAV6800AW Code LL Machine displays code LL and will not complete the spin cycle when there is something in the basket. Will complete if empty. Thinking the issue is the tub displacement...

Hey HopelessR,

The LL error code For the FAV6800AW is one of those errors that I feel is not documented very well. The only explanations I see is Large Load detected, “” The washer cannot spin because the load is to large”” OK what the heck is the trigger input to the Control Board to issue this error code to the Console Display????

I believe it’s Motor RPM not reached. I would try the Quick Spin Test on page 14 of the Service Manual and see if your machine will spin up to 850 RPM with an empty wash basket. Do you run up to 850 RPM “85.”?

I then reran the test with two large bath towels that were soaked, had to lay them in the wash basket to balance as best I could. I wanted to rerun the test with some load. The wash basket spun up thru all ranges to 850 RPM and completed with 3 beeps. Just wondering what RPM range you can complete too.

I have to additional commenst, this board has message limits for guys like me.

It sounds as if the belt is slipped. It smells a little, like burning.

If your machine is a FAV6800AWW/FAV9800AWW take a look at this post Spin cycle locks up.

I believe this forum member’s clutch pulley is locking up in the wash cycle. Pull the 120VAC plug on the machine to remove power. You need to remove the front cover to inspect the Clutch Pulley and see if you can rotate the Clutch Pulley Counter Clockwise the spin direction then Clockwise the wash/agitate direction. The rotational resistance should be free and very light. Post back with the results and we will go from there.

Here are some links for the Service Manual.

The Service Manual for reference. Sears Parts Direct for reference.

Raise the top of the machine. Insert a flat blade putty knife approximately 2.5” from the left and right sides of the washer top, depress the spring tabs securing machine top to the washer base. See page 33 of the SM for putty knife insertion point. With a 5/16 nut driver or 5/16 ¼ socket on an extension to remove front panel see page 41 of the SM

Tub rotates CW during agitation, out of balance, hits side of metal cabinet, but no error code

Hello srcoray,

Did you replace the clutch, just trying to get a feel for your hands on experience with the machine? If you did the work did your machine use the upper roller clutch bearing along with the clutch pulley mounted roller clutch bearing?

The FAV6800AW uses a reversing motor and motor controller that powers the motor and clutch pulley to rotate CW in Wash/Agitate cycle and CCW in Spin Cycle.

In Wash/Agitate cycle the roller clutch bearing should rotate freely CW allowing the agitator shaft to drive the transmission in wash cycle driving the tumblers to rotate only not the wash basket. In spin cycle the roller clutch bearing will lock up (one-way roller clutch bearing) driving the spinner shaft to rotate the wash basket and transmission CCW. Unless my thinking is wrong it sounds like the one way roller clutch bearing is frozen or dragging and not rotating freely in wash cycle rotating the wash basket CW. I’m an owner like you and will try to help.

Just a few other questions;

If you have a load of wet clothes in the wash basket and you select Spin Only cycle will the spin cycle complete with out dc/UC errors?

With the lid raised can you rotate the wash basket CW? It should not; it should only rotate CCW and do that with very little resistance.

BELT IS LOOSING TENSION CAUSING IT TO SMOKE REPLACE BELT

Apr 27, 2009 | Maytag Neptune MAH5500B Front Load Washer

1 Answer

Will not spin, therefore will not drain

Hey Joe,
Let’s check to see if the wash basket will rotate CCW in Spin Only Cycle with no clothes in the wash basket
1. Open the lid and rotate the wash basket by hand Counter Clockwise, CCW. The wash basket should rotate freely with no restriction. The wash basket will not rotate Clockwise, CW by hand.

2. Raise the top of the machine. Insert a flat blade putty knife approximately 2.5” from the left and right sides of the washer top, depress the spring tabs securing machine top to the washer base. Raise the top of the machine to observe the wash basket and tumbler action described in step 3. (See page 33 of the Service Manual for putty knife insertion point).

3. With the top raised start a Spin Only cycle with no clothes in the wash basket, observe the wash basket it should begin to rotate CCW does it?. Watch the tumblers, they should not rotate in spin cycle (maybe ½ turn at the start of spin cycle and that’s all). If the tumblers rotate while the wash basket is rotating you have a clutch malfunction. If the basket does spin CCW and the tumblers are rotating then you have a broken clutch spring. Let do those checks and observations and see what the next troubleshooting steps will be. Rich

Maytag neptune won;t rinse

Check latch mechanism for alignment. Often operation of machine loosens latch mechanism causing internal switch for "door open (or ajar)" preventing rinse or spin cycle. Opening and closing door presses latch mechanism closing internal switch allowing for continue processing to rinse or spin cycles.
