Some dryers have a broken belt micro switch mounted where a lever will stop the motor from getting into the run mode. They do this to keep the heater from catching fire. If your dryer is a DOT dryer (dryer of tomorrow) made by maytag for kenmore then it certainly has such a switch. If your dryer is a plain jane whirlpool manufactured one then you needs a motor replacement most likely friend. Sowwy.

Dryer will not stay running starts when start button is pushed will stay running if button is held in but stops as soon as button is release

Centrifugal switch in the motor is either bad, or a wire is disconnected or burned off. Be careful and disconnect electricity before checking. You will have to flip the top and remove 4 screws to remove front panel to get at motor. The centrifugal switch will be a black Bakelite assembly at the rear of the motor. Sometimes it is easier to just replace the motor.

I have a Candy GOU218 when I push the start button it does start the dryer but as soon as I release my finger from the button it stops, It started doing it around a week ago so I had to push and hold

There are push to start circuits used for motors and then there are holding circuits that keep the unit running. This way the dryer stops if the circuit is open due to high temperature or end of the cycle. It seems as if the holding circuit (could be a rotary switch that stays closed while the dryer is running) or a holding circuit relay (stays closed until circuit is broken by the control) has failed.

Dryer wont stay running

Either the motor relay, or if this is an evenheat dryer, the evenheat control board could be bad.
