Xbox 360 - "Please wait. Reading Storage Device"

After initial start-up and after the reading of the game disc the system freezes and displays "Please wait. Reading storage device". I have never used a storage card/device to save a game or to transfer a game from another unit. I have tried re-starting, unpluging, and crying...but nothing seems to work. Any ideas out there?

Thanks!

    drethegiant,

Thanks for the quick response! I did just what you suggested. I removed the hard drive and simply replaced it...and it worked! Thank you very much for your assistance...now my 7 year old son can put a hurt on me in Madden '08. Maybe I should have kept the Xbox broken!

    Thanks Again!

    Darin

does your xbox have a hard drive? Because you need a hard drive or a memory card to save a game with an xbox.. if you do have a hard drive you should take it off and put it back on; also how long has this been happening?

SOURCE: storage device not found

Saving a game requires you to have a Hard drive or memory card did you purchase the premium edition xbox 360? you can look on the outside of the xbox 360 box it will give the specs and what came with the system. If the hard drive is not on the list then you will need to buy one the xbox doesn't come with any internal memory like the systems in the past have. you will need to purchase a HD or a memory card. If you have the premium edition let me know ill instruct on how to set it up.

SOURCE: Xbox 360 deleting profiles and has no storage device

This sound like your hard drive took a ****. But before we count out the Hard drive your BIOS battery may have just died. If your warrenty is still vallid then maybe XBOX can help but if it is out then try replaceing the BIOS battery first. This would be the cheapest way. If you are uncertain what the bios battery looks like it is a flat battery that is about the size of a quarter. After you have replaced the battery and there is still no change then the next thing I would recomend is replaceing you hard drive.

Have you used the usb port on the back of your console, not the one on the front? if this is not the case, the best place to go is www.xbox.com/support or ring on 0800 587 1102 for more info.

My xbox 360, has a problem i put in a new clean disk(game) into the xbox . it is a xbox 360 game and every time i put in a new clean disk the xbox says (open tray)

The XBox 360 is a wonderful video game console, however, with heavy usage, the laser (and/or other components in the drive) will eventually burn out.

The first signs of the laser starting to burn out is that your game will start freezing during game play. Eventually the games will stop reading altogether and you will get an "OPEN TRAY" message when you put a disc in and close the tray. What this means is that the XBox 360 thinks that there is no disc in the system.

If you click into the following U.S. based website, you can find more information about this issue, the parts to fix it yourself and you can also send your XBox 360 to them to have it repaired:

Tip

How to resolve Xbox 360 disc read errors. Xbox will not play disc.

Is your xbox360 having trouble reading disc? In this guide I will provide some common solutions to help you fix your disc read issues.

1)Remove any memory devices or usb flash drives.
2)If the disc you are using is excessively scratched, this can cause the xbox to have trouble reading the disc. You can use a damp soft cloth to try and clean the disc. Grab the disc by the edges and using a soft damp cloth lightly wipe the disc from the center going outward.

3)Try removing your Xbox hard drive and then play a disc. Turn off the console. Locate the hard drive on the top of your system(depending on how you have it positioned). Press the release button on the hard drive.

If your system can read disc without the hard drive attached then you may need to replace the drive.

4)Clear the Xbox360 cache. Clearing the cache may remove updates to certain games. Keep this in mind.
Go to System Settings in the My Xbox menu. Select Memory, highlight your storage device and select Clear System Cache. Try and play the disc.

If after the above steps you are still having trouble. You may want to contact Microsoft Xbox live support to have your system serviced. You can find the support information in the link below,

Disc is not reading

If your Xbox 360 console is not reading disc, first check it this happen to multiple CD. Check if the disc has scratches on it. If not, clean the disc by wiping it with damp soft cloth from the center outward. (Note: Use distilled water). Also make sure that the disc that your playing is compatible with your console. Next step is to clear the cache by going to My Xbox > System settings > Memory > highlight the storage device and Press Y on your controller > Select Clear System Cache. Then try to play again the disc. If still same thing, disconnect the hard drive, memory units and controllers and then reconnect it again. Try to play again the disc. If the problem only occur in one disc, replace the disc. If this happens intermittently, you need to contact Xbox Support for the repair of your console.
If your console is still under warranty, I strongly suggest that you call them to have free repair. Here's their contact number (800) 4MY-XBOX or (800) 469-9269.

Hi my xbox 360 keeps telling me to open tray after a disc is inserted. it says reading then it says open tray.

1: Take a close look at the bottom side of your game, movie, or music disc (the side without a label or image). Are there scratches? Excessive scratches or smudges can prevent your console from reading the disc. Hold the disc by the edges without touching the top or bottom surfaces. Using a soft, clean, slightly damp cloth, lightly wipe from the center of the disc outward. 2: Try other discs to determine whether the problem happens with any disc or only with this particular disc. If multiple game discs, DVDs, or CDs will not play: Make sure the media type and the disc region code are compatible with the console. 3: If your Xbox 360 console can't play multiple game discs, try clearing your system cache. Here's how: On the console, go to My Xbox, and then select System Settings. Select Memory. Highlight any storage device, and then press Y on your controller.Select Clear System Cache. If you still can't play a game disc, try the next solution. 4: If the solutions above did not resolve your problem, please send Microsoft your Xbox 360 console for repair..

Games not reading

First some basic steps to troubleshooting

1) Restart your console.
2) Check for loose cables.
3) Pull out all the cables, and get them back in.
4) Take out the hard-drive, and put it back in. Repeat this 4 times.

Try to use several similar Xbox 360-compatible discs in the console to determine whether the disc that you are using is causing the problem. To test whether the problem is caused by a specific disc, use a disc of the same type, such as a game disc, DVD movie, or music CD. If the problem does not occur when you use other discs, that specific disc might be the cause of the problem.

For disc-specific issues, check the disc for any visible signs of damage or dirt. Hold the disc by the edges without touching the top or bottom surfaces with your fingers. Clean the disc by using a soft cloth. Lightly wipe from the center outwards. Do not use solvents or chemicals to clean the disc.

If you suspect that the Xbox 360 device could be causing the problem you can follow these steps

1. If you have access to another Xbox 360 console, try to play the disc on the other console. Or, if the disc is a CD or a DVD, try to play the disc on another device, such as a CD player, a DVD player, or a computer that is equipped to play CDs or DVDs.

2. If you have an Xbox 360 Hard Drive (HDD) or Memory Unit (MU) attached to the console, turn off the console, and remove the HDD and any attached MU. Then, turn on your console, and try the disc again. If this seems to resolve the problem, turn off your console, reattach the HDD and MU, and then delete any saved games for the game that is causing problems.

If this does not resolve the problem but removing the hard disk does, clear the hard disk drive cache

To clear the cache, follow these steps:

1. Move to the System Settings section of the Xbox 360 dashboard.
2. Select Memory.

Highlight a storage device.Do not press the A button, Press the Y button to view the Device Options screen, Select Clear System Cache, and then select Yes to clear the cache.

I presume you do not have a hacked version of Xbox 360 because this problem is prevalent with Xbox 360 dvd drives which are hacked also if the above steps do not resolve your issue, please send your Xbox 360 to Repairs, call up MS support and check for the charges of Repairs in case your Xbox is not covered under warranty.
