Sony mini disc recorder mds 501 stuck in standby mode; doesn't respond to any commands

It could be more than just a switch but maybe the tact switch for the power is not working. It might need to be replaced. It may be a job for a technician as sometimes the face plate has to come off to get to the board with these switches mounted in it. I have replaced some switches and that was the answer- it should be pretty easy to determine in the right hands.

I can't my Sony mini disk player to turn on. It stays in standby mode

I'd try pressing the play button after record or releasing the pause button.

Is it an MDS-JE530? Do you have a minidisc in it? If yes, then unplug the unit. Slide the little switch from TIMER "OFF" to "PLAY", then plug the unit back in. After 10 seconds, it should turn on and start playing the minidisc. Let me know if that works or if we need to try something else, okay?

Start button not working standby light staying

The switch is for 'REC' 'Standby' and "PLAY".
If you leave it switched to "Play" and pull the plug and push it in to the wall receptacle (mains) it should start playing after a few seconds delay. The same for "REC". You use a timer unit on the power cord for those.
If you have the switch in the middle position and plugged-in, you should have a tiny Red LED illuminated. Push "Power" and it should start-up and be ready to use in a matter of a few seconds.

Mini Disc Not Working

Pull the power cord. Make sure the three-position switch with "REC/Standby/PLAY" is in the middle position, then plug the cord back in. Wait a minute, then press POWER. Now load a disk and wait 1 minute for it to read the Table of Contents (TOC). Either it will show the tracks, or it will say 'empty disk'. Let us know what happens from there, okay?
