I also have black soot all over my wall my plastic dishes straws I had contacted our ins company they had the nerve to blame it all on 1 single candle that had only ever been lit once before and after the black soot had appeared on the wall.. so needless to say the problem went unsolved... so we scrubbed all the walls down which is a chore in itself because the soot is oily so it just spreads ... any way we paint like every 3 months to get rid of the black soot we dont know whats causing it but I am concerned for my familys health it cant be healthy!! who do i call next... Gas company came out sd no carbon monoxide so I am relieved but still this is not normal..

By sealed unit you mean that the burner air comes from outside of the house?      You have checked the heat exchanger for cracks by removing the burners and looking with a mirror and flashlight, correct, or had a service tech so?
The furnace burners have enough air and are burning clean (blue) with just a tip of orange at the end? You bought the house new and the fireplace has never been used?  If it has been used to clean smoke for the house for whatwever reason I woudl start by havign the ducts cleaned.   Another possibility I have seen is insolation inside of ductwork breaking down.

Hi i have a wireless room thermostat i wish to fit to my potterton boiler can anyone advise me thanks

in general-
wireless thermo has 2 units - room thermo and furnace rcvr.
if thermo is battery powered no wires to connect - if not needs 24V connected - then why do they call it wireless?
rcvr connects to same 4 wires as current therm except at the furnace - 24v power and 2 control lines
I can't remember the color code except red/black is +24v/common
but I have found them messed up by "professional" installers so u need to verify before connecting or go by the terminal labeling.

I just had my furnace cleaned it is a gas rheem. The service guy said it was overheated because of a#3 tube he said the furnace heat exchange is black. What can be do regarding this

I presume you're talking about a gas furnace, even tho the title says Rheem gas water heater. Either way, it works the same for both.

Any black coloring on the heat exchanger is *not* from overheating. Black is from a sooty flame caused by a mis-adjusted burner. (In fact, a sooty flame is less hot). There is an adjustable "air intake plate" for air to enter the burner where the gas enters the burner. A proper flame is made by adjusting this air opening so the proper gas/air mixture feeds into the burner. If the air vent is closed too much it produces a sooty flame.
The age of the furnace is the most important aspect, and that helpful to determine a likely condition of the heat exchanger and burners. Other than a badly adjusted flame, the main thing to watch for is a badly rusted out heat exchanger. But black does not mean rust.

What size fresh air vent do I need in a boiler room with a gas boiler and gas hot water heater with about 220,000 btu combined

I suggest that you run a duct that is 3 inches larger than the furnace duct . and you should run it down close to the floor and aim it in the direction of the furnace. this will trap warm air above the vent and supply an adequate supply of air for combustion. also make sure you have insulated any pipes in the furnace room that carry water or steam you want heat where you live, not going up the chimney.

How do i get even heat thru out the house with a daka wood stove

http://www.hearth.com/talk/categories/main-hearth-forums.4/
You burn wood, and smoke goes up flueway.
You're not running chimney smoke through ductwork so you have a heat exchanger.
What kind of heat exchanger?
probably air since you're running through ductwork?
How much hot air or hot water is coming off heat exchanger?
How big of a space can be heated with that amount of heat?
Is the exchanger located in optimal location?

Considerations.
One room log cabin with fireplace will not stay very warm.
One room house with big wood burning stove in center, with hot flue pipe running across the room and exiting on far wall, will get warm-hot, but will cool off fast.
Why?
Because the BTU output of firewood is much less than electric, coal, oil, or gas.
Otherwise they would have made wood-burning steam locomotives. But the locomotive boiler cannot get hot enough with wood ... the boiler needs coal to produce enough BTUs to boil water fast enough to rotate the turbine and turn the wheels.

Maybe your wood stove output should be measured.
Don't forget a huge percentage of fire heat goes straight up flueway.

I have a concentric vent on my furnace. I put a vent cap on top because it goes there the roof. I am getting water in the furnace fron the fresh air intake. I can't seem to find out why. Could the

most concentric vent kits do not have a cap on the exhaust termination. if they do they are usually approved for use with that particular vent kit. most of the concentric vents i have seen have terminated through the side wall of the house and have no "rain cap" on them. if the cap you put on the vent is one you "home made" then you need to remove it and get one that is approved for use on your make of vent. I suspect that the water you are getting running down the air intake part of the vent may be water that has condensed from the exhaust fumes. If the cap is an approved one then you may have a leak in the exhaust pipe section of the vent and I would suggest you call an expert in to verify the integrity of the venting system

We recently purchased a home with a heil furnace and I need to know what size filter it requires. It is a gas heil model # NUG1075DF01. Please help !

That is hard to answer but I would say that for a furnace of that size you are probably looking at somewhere around 16x20x1. On older heil furnaces they often had the filter mounted inside the blower compartment so if the case you can just remove the cover and measure it. If not it should be located on the return air duct close to the furnace. Hope this helps you some. Thank you.

Where do install a Heil furnace filter?

MAYBE IT DOES NEED IF THE FILTER IN THE COLD AIR RETURN GRILL MAKE SURE THEIR IS NO FILTER IN THIS FIRST , AS 2 FILTERS ARE NOT BETTER THAN ONE WHEN COME TO ELECTRIC FURN AND H/P ALSO IS THIS A UP-FLOW ,DOWN FLOW OR HORZ MEANING AIR #1 RTN IN BOTTOM DISCHARGE COMING OUT OF TOP OR#2 COLD AIR COMING IN TOP AND DISCHARGE OUT OF BOTTOM OR #3FURNACE LAYING SIDE-WAYS AIR COMING IN ONE END AND OUT OTHER THESE WOULD DETERMINE FILTER LOCATIONS
