Question about Craftsman 16" High Garden Tractor Snow and Dozer Blade

Open Question

Snowblower Auger rubber has worn out basically after 2months of u

I bought a single stage craftsman snowthrower from sears on Feb 12th, 2007 and less than a yr later i took it to the repair center coz, it was stalling out. The tech indicates that water got into the carburator and also the rubber on the auger has worn all the way to the steel......which needs replacement and it's gonna cost $212 to repair. Sears tells me that my manufacters warranty is not gonna cover this. How common is this problem?? Is this a bad model snowthrower? What's a reliable and durable name brand snowthrower out in the market today??

Hey Jer! Ty for the reply. I just gave in to the sears repair people and told them to go ahead and fix it....they told me it's gonna cost about $158.

How come the rubber on the auger wears out so quickly??.....i've really used only about 10 times.

Jer - u said that the rubber will wear out quickly if the snowblower is not operated properly. What does operating properly mean??.....i just push it up and down the driveway and sidewalk the way u would with a lawn mower. What's the proper way to operate this machine? thanks.

SOURCE: I have a 17 year old snowblower. Sears Craftsman

Good to hear you got it running anyway.

Look for a choke, maybe it's just running with the choke set. Could also be that it's all gummed up from sitting, if that is the case then some running should bring it out of it by the time you've put a couple of tanks of fuel through it.

Is this a two-stroke motor? If so, be sure you have your fuel mixed correctly- go by the manufacturer's statement concerning how much oil to how much fuel, never assume that the oil bottle directions apply to your machine because they probably don't.

Good luck with it,

lp

If the blower (impeller) turns and the auger doesn't there is a 90% chance you broke the shear bolts that protect the auger gear box.
toolboxhero_3.jpg
Look at your auger and you will find the bolts shown at the arrows in this picture are missing. Some snowthrowers will have two bolts and others like the new Craftsman will have four.
You can get new ones at your local mower repair shop, your local Sears mall store, or online at sears.com.
Use shear pins or shear bolts not regular bolts. The shear bolts are designed to break off so you don't tear out the front gear box.

SOURCE: I have a Craftsman 9hp snowblower and it is not

It is belt driven, the belt is located between the chute and the engine behind the inspection cover some have it on the top and some on the bottom. That model may have to be split in half to get the belt past the shaft. But regardless it can at least be inspected by taking the cover off. Please let me know if this helps

Clean the carburetor. The needle and float are stuck closed, passage blocked or a jet plugged with debris. Give it a good cleaning.

My snowblower won't go into gear when I start it.

If your snow blower is a two stage, you can tilt unit up by handles and carefully rest unit on front auger housing. (Most units you can do this, but be careful, not all do). Then, remove bolts that hold bottom plate on snow blower, and remove bottom plate. If you follow the shift linkage down from handle to where it enters inside the unit, you will soon see how it works. Most types have the gear shifter hooked up to an apparatus that moves a rubber friction disc along a shaft, further towards the center for lower gears and vice versa. My guess is that you need to lubricate the shaft that this rubber disc slides along. Try some white lithium grease and have someone carefully move shifter throughout gear range. Be careful to not get grease on round friction plate below, this is where the rubber friction disc mates up to when drive is engaged(you don't want it slipping). Try this and let me know if you have questions. If you post actual make, model and serial# I can post pics if you like. Good luck and happy wrenching!

Have a craftsmand 24" snowthrower

If the motor runs well, the two most common causes of this are the drive belt is worn and/or the shear pins are broke.
If you remove the cover (usually plastic) in the middle of the snow thrower and look at the belts.
Your operator's manual will show you how to remove the cover and check/change the belts.
If you don't have a copy you can get the manual through managemyhome.com
You will need the model number off the snowblower. It is usually located on the bottom right hand corner of the frame (from the handle side)
The model number looks like 247.123456.
The belt closest to the blower assembly drives the auger/blower and the belt closest to the engine drives the transmission. It sounds like you need to inspect the blower belt.
With the engine not running, have someone depress the drive lever and check the belt.
You should only be able to depress the long side 1/2 inch or less. More than that the belt has stretched and needs to be replaced.
On some older blowers you can adjust the tension pulley, but most made in the last 15 years, you can't.
The belt may be frayed on the edges or glazed causing it to slip (it is shiny on the sides of the belt) It may be torn and broke completely.
Replace the belt if it is worn, stretched or frayed
The shear pins are located on the auger in the front of the machine. Your newer Craftsman has four. If you don't now about them look in your operator's manual for the location. You need all four for the snowblower to work well. Replace the missing ones.
You can get parts for you Craftsman and most MTD made models through searspartsdirect.com. With other makes you can get parts through jackssmallengines.com
If you are unfamiliar with repairing machines you can get your snow blower repaired by taking it to your local Sears.
They will have a technician troubleshoot and repair the unit.

Ariens Snowblower won't engage into drive

I had the same problem with my 5HP Dual stage (C950-520240) Canadian model and found that the arm connected to the traction cable (part #85449 "Shaft Traction Clutch") which forces the friction disk up to the rubber friction wheel had a cracked weld and had bent, preventing positive contact with the rubber friction wheel. The drive wheels would turn if you lifted the back of the machine off the ground, but would not work if under load. First I replaced the belt and rubber friction wheel, but no go. I had to basically disassemble the whole drive assembly to find the problem, very frustrating because you could not see the crack in the arm from head on. I had the cracked and bent arm straightened and welded, all is OK now. enb54.jpg
