Rotate the Mode Dial to SETUP select Date and then press the "enter" arrow key. You can find the detail on page 120 of the user manual which you can download on the link below: http://www.nikonusa.com/pdf/manuals/coolpix/5900_7900_en.pdf

Do you have the self-timer turned on? You could go into the camera menu and find "reset" to return to default settings.

When camera is in picture mode there is a red flashing "timer like" icon on the screen. Help!

Is the date programmed on your camera? If not follow the below steps to get rid of the annoying and unsightly icon. :)

~ Press the Scene button and select Auto mode. Then OK.
~ Now press the Menu button. You should have two menu options and they are shown on the left side of the screen. Shooting menu and Set Up should be the available tabs.
~ Navigate to the left and then down to highlight the Set Up tab (looks like a wrench) then push OK.
~ Locate the Date option and push OK and set the camera clock to the current date and time.

Hope this helps!
